Dear Parents/Carers
It has certainly been nice to feel a hint of spring in the air and experience a few more slightly warmer days.
As always, there is a lot happening in our school which makes it a vibrant and exciting place to be. On Tuesday, 20 August we held one of our S.W.A.T. Days (Success, Wellbeing, Aspiration, Teamwork) for the term. As part of this day, David Annear and Ted Burton from Rotary came and spoke to our Year 9 and 10 students about some of the many great offerings that Rotary can provide for young people. Even though we are already involved in events that are supported by Rotary (i.e. Science and Engineering Challenge, RYDA – Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program) there are still quite a number of other fantastic opportunities available. Coinciding with S.W.A.T. Day was also a Beacon excursion to the Longford Veterinary Clinic building site, Taswood Joinery in Kings Meadows and the Tasmanian Building Group Apprenticeship Scheme (TasbGAS) training site in Waverly. This excursion was focussed on careers and apprenticeships in the construction industry. Thank you to Belinda Selby and Brendan Poke for supporting this activity. Some of our students were also involved in a luncheon as part of the Beacon Polish program. Thank you to Todd Nankervis and the catering students for providing the food for this lunch. Similarly, thank you to our industry and business mentors for their involvement with a question-and-answer session as well as mock interviews. Over four days last week, we also had students involved in the Northern Regional Carnival of the High School Netball Championships, held at the Silverdome. Thank you to Isabella Darsaklis, Emma Attard and Belinda Selby for supporting our teams at the Championships and congratulations to all students involved. Last Wednesday, 21 August we held one of two whole school assemblies for the term. Congratulations to all students who were recognised, performed or presented.
As part of our recent upgrade to our Gymnasium we have installed some new basketball hoops, backboards, shot clocks and supporting structures. I have included a photo for you to see how great they are. I am sure our students and after-hours basketball groups will put them to good use. I would also like to thank and acknowledge local gym F45 Training who have kindly donated some equipment to our school. This is greatly appreciated and very welcome as we continue to invest in ensuring we have outstanding facilities for our students, staff and community.
As a school we are very committed to working with our local primary schools to ensure our future Year 7 students are well prepared and set up for success when they arrive at secondary school. Over the course of the week, our transition team of Claire Lovitt and Brendan Poke have been visiting the feeder schools with our student transition leaders and conducting mini expos about our school. I hope our prospective students found these interesting and useful. On S.W.A.T. Day we also welcomed Grade 1 and 2 students from Youngtown Primary School to work with our Year 8 students. It was great having these ‘little people’ join us for the day and bring their sense of excitement, wonder and energy to our school.
Mathew Battle has now commenced his pre-planned leave and we have welcomed one of our regular relief teachers, Paul Steer to our teaching team in place of Mr Battle. Mr Battle returns part ways through next term. I am sure everyone will make Mr Steer feel welcome.
The annual Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey will be conducted from 26 August to 20 September. Parents and carers should have previously received a specific message relating to this survey. All students across the school complete this survey unless withdrawn by their parent or carer. This survey provides another useful set of data for our school and for the Department for Education, Children and Young People. The voice of our students is very important to us and this is one way by which that input can be collected. Similarly, the School Satisfaction Surveys for families are also now open. Your input and feedback are valuable to us, so I encourage you to complete this short, confidential survey. Thankyou in anticipation.
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) results for Tasmania and Australia have now been released. You may recall that I shared with you the positive results that we achieved when compared to similar schools. While work in improving literacy will always be ongoing and we still have a gap between our results and the average results across Australia, there were also some results to celebrate. In Year 7, average scores were above Tasmania in reading, spelling and grammar/punctuation, whereas Year 9s were above Tasmanian results in writing. Both Year 7 and Year 9 groups were similar to Tasmania in numeracy, with Year 9s similar to Tasmania in spelling and Year 7s similar to Australia in reading.
As I am sure you are aware from my previous articles, regular attendance at school is critical. While getting to school is fundamental, we also need to see students emotionally, behaviourally and cognitively engaged when they are here in order to maximise their learning and wellbeing outcomes. Two key measures of attendance are the average attendance rate (i.e. a percentage of how often a child attends) and the attendance level (i.e. a percentage indicating the proportion of students attending the recommended minimum attendance rate of 90% or, in other words, attending 9 out of every 10 Days). I have included a graphical representation of recent data below.
The University of Tasmania has advised that the way the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is calculated will change from 2025 onwards. This is important for students progressing to senior secondary studies. This change will see ATAR calculated by using the ‘best 5’ pre-tertiary subjects over two calendar years of senior secondary education (Years 11-13). This is a change from the current calculation where students must take (min) 3x pre-tertiary subjects from their final year and (max) 2 subjects from any other year. This change has been informed by data and consultation with the Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) and the Tasmanian Assessment Standards & Certification (TASC) to ensure that students are not unintentionally impacted. The benefit of this change is that students will have more flexibility and choice in how they structure their subject selection over senior secondary education. Furthermore, the 'best five' aligns with a national focus on a more consistent approach to ATAR calculation across all jurisdictions. I have included a fact sheet with more detailed information.
Congratulations to all students who participated in the ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) Mathematics competition yesterday and the ICAS Spelling Bee on 20 August. It has been wonderful to see so many students taking up the option of accessing a variety of academic competitions over the past few weeks and thank you to Jake Chamberlain for co-ordinating these multiple events. I am sure we will have some students who perform exceptionally well.
Regards
Cary Stocks

As part of our Positive Behaviour Support Program at Kings Meadows we will be acknowledging students who have been contributing positively to our learning environment. This means that they have been supporting our school wide expectations.
Respect for others, self and environment
Organisation
Commitment to learning
Keeping safe
Sensible behaviour
We would like to acknowledge the following students:
Year 7:
Ebony Craig – For going out of her way to help tidy our school without being asked.
Konan Brown – For quietly and consistently giving his all and upholding our R.O.C.K.S. every day.
Year 8:
Luke Brophy, Mav Brimfield, Elijah Bower, Molly Dudman, Lucy Boarder, Alice Patten, Reigan Green, Alix Maynard, Laila Biffin, Grayson Allen - For showing outstanding leadership and care for the Grade 1 and 2 Youngtown Primary students on our S.W.A.T. Day on 20 August.
Charles McMahon - For going above and beyond, showing initiative in assisting packing up after the whole school assembly.
Year 9:
Lucy Anderson, Amelia Armstrong and Jayda Hodgetts - For their work at the recent Trivia night. They all put in a lot of work supporting the Prefects – before, during and after the big night. Their ‘can do’ attitude has been recognised and noticed by staff/students. Well done!
Year 10:
Stephanie Warren and Max Kerrison - For their continued focus and application in Maths.
Last Tuesday saw our Year 7 students engage in S.W.A.T. Day. These days see us suspend our usual curriculum to have a focus on other key learning opportunities as a grade.
This time, our S.W.A.T. Day morning saw students being asked to reflect on their own engagement, as well as factors that can support students to attend every day. This also provided students with the opportunity to provide feedback to teachers that can be used to continue to support them moving forward. After recess classes were mixed up to further strengthen relationships across our Year 7 cohort. Students rotated through sessions covering a range of topics including wellbeing, how to write and send a formal email, screen time and communicating instructions to others.
In the afternoon, classes competed in a bit of healthy competition outside as Mr Chatwin lead the Year 7 classes through several teamwork challenges. Congratulations to 7C who took out first place on the day!
As usual, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s Class Teacher if you have any queries or concerns, or messages to pass on throughout the term. We look forward to continuing to work with families to achieve the best outcomes for every student.

Year 8’s have been enjoying a variety of activities over the past two weeks including their involvement in Science Week activities, where they built and raced balloon powered rockets. In addition to that they are currently engaged in the following learning in their CORE classes:
HPE: Practical - Invasion Games
Theory: Social Media and Respectful Relationships (including Reproductive Health)
Science: Biology: Body Systems (8A, D, E and F) and Cells (8B and C)
Maths: Linear Algebra
English: Is it Write?
Hass: Urbanisation
On our recent S.W.A.T. (Success, Wellbeing, Teamwork and Aspiration) day last Tuesday 20 August the Year 8’s were involved in a Community Engagement Session with Grades 1 and 2 students from Youngtown Primary School. All students in Year 8 had to select, plan and run an activity with these students. These included Art, Dance, HPE activities, STEM activities and Music. This was an extremely valuable experience for both our Year 8’s and the YPS students and a great way to strengthen our community.
This term the Year 8’s are also undertaking an increased focus on improving their schoolwide R.O.C.K.S. behaviours, with the goal of rewarding students at the end of Term. Classes are being assessed each lesson on particular criteria, with a focus each week. Week 5 focus was Respect and Week 6 is Organisation. At the end of the Term the students who have shown consistently outstanding marks throughout the term will be chosen to receive a movie and popcorn afternoon as a reward. An additional reward for the top students from this group will be a trip to the Launceston Lanes to go Ten Pin Bowling. So plenty of incentive for students to show and model consistent R.O.C.K.S. behaviours in all their classes – good luck students!
Class Rewards System – What does Respect look like?
- Keep our voices calm and quiet and keep hands to ourselves.
- Listen while others are sharing and contribute your ideas by putting your hand up and not calling out.
- Come into class quietly and sit in the right spot ready to listen to your teacher.
- Put your iPad face down when you arrive and don’t use it until instructed.
- Make sure you are not talking when the teacher is talking.
- Looking after workspaces by keeping them clean and undamaged.
Class Rewards System – What does Organisation look like?
- At the start of the day when you arrive for class teacher make sure you have everything needed for each lesson make sure you have pens, pencils, subject books, charged iPad.
- Use your time wisely in each class and submit work on time.
- Go to the toilet at break times so you don’t miss important learning.
- Ensure you are in the classroom and seated by the second bell.
We hope that parents can support their students with these behaviours and encourage them to strive for excellence and to achieve the fantastic rewards.
Finally, we would like to acknowledge the Year 8 girls and boys who competed in the Northern Schools Netball Championships recently. Well done for representing the school with pride.

Students have been exploring leadership and career opportunities over the past few weeks. S.W.A.T. day on Tuesday was a fantastic day where students were able undertake their White Card – Construction Induction Training, while also being given the opportunity to delve into the Year 10 leadership roles in 2025. Roles of Prefects, House Captains, Peer Support and Beacon Ambassadors are some of the opportunities on offer. All students have been strongly encouraged to apply for these roles, as the application process can be linked to applying for future positions in employment (similar process).
With the term at the half way point, our focus in grade assemblies has been around bringing a positive attitude and putting in the effort in all aspects of what our student undertake. As a number of the Year 9 students have recently been on the Beacon excursion, a common theme across various work site visits was the value employers have around attitude and effort. Listening and being proactive in the work place was also some of the key points employers focus on. These areas are certainly not new to our students, therefore, its great the same message is being replicated across school/industries.
Lastly, on a positive note, we have had some great news from students who applied for positions at McDonalds. Three of our Year 9 students were able to follow through with the information given (at the Term 1 S.W.A.T. Day) and been given employment at the Kings Meadows franchise. Congratulations to these students and a big thankyou to staff who assisted in the organisation of the programs.

Melbourne Trip
Last weekend, 29 Year 10 students and 3 staff embarked on a three day Melbourne Trip. After arriving at the airport at 5:15am to discover we had no plane to board, then a five hour wait until one arrived, we finally set off. The MCG Tour, Beauty and the Beast, AFL games at the MCG and Marvel Stadium, facing some fears 88 floors up on the Eureka Skydeck, lots of shopping and very little sleep made for a great three day adventure. Special mentions must go to the three students who actually came to school on Monday!
Representing KMHS
A huge congratulations to all of our Year 10 students who have represented Kings Meadows at various events over the last few weeks. Netball championships, ICAS competitions, Write a Book in a Day, Trivia Night, Beacon site visits, Melbourne Trip and Wednesday sport teams are all examples of fantastic opportunities for students to demonstrate to our community just how amazing they are.
What are we learning at the moment?
English – Romeo and Juliet
Maths – Pythagoras’ Theorem and Trigonometry
History – The Cold War
Science – Physics (Newton’s Laws)
HPE – Adapted Physical Activity & Reproductive Health
These core subject areas provide vital learning for our Year 10 students. By regularly sharing current areas of study allows parents/carers to have meaningful conversations with students about their learning. If you would like to know more, please contact the relevant teacher.
Grade Focus
Our focus for Year 10 this term is making positive choices and being responsible for our own learning. Upcoming Year 10 Exams are an important experience for our students and should be taken seriously. Most people at some point in their adult lives will need to sit and complete a written exam/test, so our exam week gives an authentic exam experience in preparation for future opportunities that may arise. Please encourage our students to use their in-class revision time to ensure they are well prepared for their exams and gain the most out of the experience.

Term 3 is a busy time for Performing Arts students! Students have begun preparing items for Arts Night to be held in Week 4 of Term 4 – Thursday 7 November.
In addition to this we have two exciting events coming up. On Friday 6 September all Senior Drama students from both Ms Blaubaum and Mrs Breen’s classes will be travelling to Deloraine to compete in the Deloraine Drama Festival that evening. This is always an amazing opportunity to perform their work in a real theatre, receiving authentic adjudication.
In the same week there are a number of Music students competing in the Rock Challenge.
On Thursday 5 September the following four Year 9 students will compete in the Acoustic Session - Francis Azarian, Sheena Balon, Olive Baker and Abbey Brook.
On Friday 6 September three bands will perform in the Rock Band section at the Door of Hope. They have to perform one original and a cover. Bands are:
Pilgrim: Beau Chugg, Penya Sam, James Harris and Manjy Bains
Saturday for Sale: Penya Sam, Levi Swift, Cameron Gurteen, Shade St Clair and Charles McMahon
Afternoon Daydream: Sheena Balon, April Agario, Ava Hildred, Chiara Stanley
Performing Arts teachers are so proud of all of these students for showing not only their talents but being courageous enough to perform to real audiences! We wish them all the best of luck!
National Science Week ran from 10 to 18 August and is an annual celebration of science and technology. It is a fantastic opportunity to encourage curiosity, foster innovative thinking and explore different possibilities.
Our celebration of Science Week saw students from Years 7, 8 and 9 engage in various hands-on STEM challenges, modelling real world problems. These challenges required students to apply their knowledge, think like an engineer, problem solve and design a solution to their challenge using limited resources.
Year 7 students designed bottle rockets with the goal of achieving the longest time in the air. They had to consider how much water to use as fuel, as well as the aerodynamics of their rocket to minimise drag. Congratulations to Charlie, Ethan, Ryan and Tyrone whose rocket performed the best on the day overall.
Year 8 classes worked on constructing balloon powered cars, that could go the furthest distance with the smallest number of inflations. Our winners this year were Charles and Alex whose construction was the most original, inventive and ‘outside the box’ design seen in years.
In Year 9, students constructed towers from carboard straws and paper that had to not only reach for the sky, but also hold weight in a simulated earthquake. In this challenge a combination of height and mass were required to score highly. While one group managed build a shorter tower that held an astonishing 5 kilos, there was a tie for the highest score as Ash and Lily constructed a 32cm tower that held an impressive 1.6 kilos while Mohammad, Jayden and Aaron’s 42cm tower scored equally with 800 grams.
Congratulations to all students who engaged in Science Week challenges this year!

What is the best book you’ve ever read?
This is a tricky question and I am such a huge reader that I can’t say just one! I am huge Stephen King fan and read everything by him. I tell everyone not to ‘pigeon hole him!’ - all of his modern crime and mystery novels are fantastic – don’t think of him as just a horror writer. His best ‘older’ book is ‘The Stand’ but I recommend ‘22.11.63’ and ‘Billy Summers’ as his best more modern novels.
I also read everything by Ken Follett – this is epic historical fiction. The books weigh a lot so they aren’t good for bedtime reading! The Pillars of the Earth (5 books) series and Century Trilogy are fantastic – but you need to commit because they are all between 800-1200 pages!
I honestly read everything though. I love ‘chick-lit’ like Gillian Flynn and Jodi Picoult and Liane Moriarty and I also love Australian Fiction like all of Trent Dalton’s books and Tim Winton. Like teachers before me have said in their interviews, I also love Pip Williams – The Dictionary of Lost Words and The Bookbinder of Jericho and Kristin Hannah The Nightingale.
Which book is on your ‘to-read’ list at the moment?
Next on my list is The Women by Kristin Hannah and whatever Stephen King's new book will be!
What is it that you enjoy the most about reading?
It is just such a relaxing hobby. I love being able to sit at the beach or by the pool or on my deck in the sun with a good book! I like the escape and interesting characters. I like being able to relate to characters and stories I read too. And I love learning more about history and historical events.
Name: Nathan Meurant
Role at KMHS: History and English teacher
What is the best book you’ve ever read?
Technically, the text that I've read the most is an academic journal article about music theory called "Beyond the Crisis of Material - Chris Dench's Funk" By Richard Toop. It is a super complicated document describing the almost rocket-science levels of mathematics that goes into creating a piece of music that I love. I may have read it up to 30 times in the last few years!
If I was to pick a fiction book, it would be E. M. Forster's novella "The Machine Stops". While it is only 20 pages long, there is so much depth to the story, set in a futuristic Earth entirely run by a central "machine".
Which book is on your ‘to-read’ list at the moment?
I'm currently reading Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. It's an amazing work describing Viktor's experiences as a prisoner in concentration camps in World War II. The book is a heavy read and Frankl doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable details about the hardships he and other prisoners faced. There's also a deeper dive into Frankl's own psychological studies that I haven't got to yet (but am excited about).
What is it that you enjoy the most about reading?
I have always believed that the knowledge we gain from reading has a huge impact on our individual freedom. By learning more from both fiction non-fiction books, I begin to understand myself and those around me so that I can make better, more informed decisions. To me, this makes reading exciting and addictive.
On Tuesday 20 August a group of Year 9 and 10 students had a great opportunity in visiting Tas City Building, Taswood Joinery and TasBGAS. Students were able to learn from experts in the field and understand a little more of what is expected when gaining employment. A big thankyou to Casey, John, Josh, Mark and Kane for supporting our students in their career journey.
BEACON HIGH IMPACT POLISH PROGRAM
Today 25 Year 9 students were involved in the Beacon High Impact Polish Program. This invaluable program teaches students about first impressions, transferable skills and how to write an elevator pitch about themselves. They then meet industry mentors with a Q and A panel and have a networking lunch before undertaking mock interview with the mentors. Thank you to Mr Nankervis and the catering team for our delicious lunch. Congratulations to students involved for participating to such a high standard. Thank you also to the Beacon Foundation for hosting another wonderful program. We are excited about future programs.

YEAR 10 SCIENCE AT NEWSTEAD COLLEGE:
A group of intrepid Year 10 students bravely agreed to attend a Science excursion to Newstead College last Friday morning.
Thirteen students were bussed to the Science Department of Newstead College and were thrown into various activities which involved them bursting balloons, breaking eggs and jumping in fits and starts (although not all of these activities simultaneously). The students were invited to experience some Science experiments which demonstrated the importance of measurement in different contexts. Everyone survived the trip and several students smiled, some even more than once.
We are thrilled to announce the arrival of our brand-new school football guernseys, designed and made by the talented team at LRF. These guernseys not only look fantastic but also represent the spirit and unity of our school community.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to LRF for their exceptional work in creating these guernseys. Their dedication to quality and design has truly shone through and we couldn’t be happier with the result.
In addition to their design and manufacturing efforts, LRF generously sponsored a portion of the guernseys, helping to make this project a reality. We are incredibly grateful for their support and commitment to our school.
We would also like to express our gratitude to AFL Schools for their sponsorship of some of our girls guernseys. Their contribution has been invaluable in ensuring that our team is well-equipped and ready to take on the season with pride.
Thank you once again to LRF and AFL Schools for their generosity and support. We look forward to seeing our team in action, proudly wearing their new guernseys!
Go Kings!
On Friday 9 August, the Prefect Board alongside additional members from the other leadership groups came together to make the 2024 Trivia Night a huge success. Mrs Glasby opened the evening and Amir Rahmi and Levi Swift then kicked off the night with Round 1, TV and Movies. A further nine rounds were to follow which were hosted by other leadership groups, with three inter-round games: they consisted of guessing the logo, guess the quote from movies and the fan favourite, the student leader mash up. These games broke up the night and gave the teams an added opportunity to gain extra valuable points. Across the night, student leaders interacted with our guests, creating an atmosphere of warmth and engagement, while letting personalities peek though the professionalism. We would like to congratulate the winning team who won by one point, the Year 10 team aka ‘Cary, who?’
Members of our Senior Catering team prepared and delivered a total of 25 platters. It was made possible with the combined efforts of both of the Senior Catering classes and our Year 8 Food Tech classes. Across the first three weeks of the term, they worked hard to prepare seven savoury items for fourteen platters and four sweets items to make eleven platters. We thank Mr Nankervis, Mrs Bent, Jacqui and the students who were involved from Block 5 until 8.00pm. The Prefect Board would like to extend our thanks to all teachers and fellow student leaders, including the Year 9 Beacon Ambassadors, who gave up their time to help and support with the execution of the night. We thank over 40 businesses for their generosity with supporting the night. Overall, we raised $4,138.58 that will go towards the prefect legacy gift.
