Worlds Greatest Shave
School is more than a place to prepare for the world academically. It’s a place for students to learn about friendship and community and how to be a good citizen; a place to learn and grow, belong and be nurtured. Meaningful school traditions instil pride in our students and encourage a sense of connection with our community and beyond.
Throughout each school year, Kings Meadows High creates opportunities for the community to participate in or celebrate our students and their achievements. These events and traditions form part of who we are and what we value. One meaningful tradition that makes us proud to be part of the school community is the World’s Greatest Shave (WGS).
This year our students raised $4,485. This is a wonderful achievement by not only those students that chose to shave their heads but to our whole school community who support this event by sponsoring students and donating funds to help families experiencing blood cancer to access the support they need.
Over the past seven years our school has raised a total of $19,864.20 to help fund leading-edge research. We are very proud of our school and our students and their commitment to this event that has now become an annual tradition.
ABCDE Learning Project
The City of Launceston has collaborated with Bank of I.D.E.A.S. to deliver four Asset Based Community Driven Effort (ABCDE). Council is working with the Kings Meadows community to implement Launceston's fifth ABCDE Learning Site over a 12 month period.
The Learning Sites enable a community to identify their assets, build connections and create change in the heart of the community to benefit those living within the area. The approach is about focusing on 'what's strong, not what's wrong'. More information can be found here.
Kings Meadows High School has been involved in a range of activities within the project. The latest is a new mural painted on the KMHS logo wall near the basketball courts.
We would like to thank Mel McVee, the Mural artist, who last year worked with our students to develop the design for our mural. Across the month of May this year Mel, Mrs Crawford our Art teacher and over thirty students have painted the mural.
Our school was featured in The Examiner and in a LCC video describing the project. You can watch the video here.

Staff: Mrs Dobson, Mrs Dalton and Miss Hart.
Student Leaders: Adut, Lincoln, Zavier and Maggie.
Who all helped to cook and serve at the BBQ at KMHS on Saturday 21st May, 2022.
Thank you to Mr Biggelaar and Ms Howard who behind the scenes ensured we had the tools and materials to cook the BBQ. Thank you to our sponsors JBS who donated sausages and Cripps who donated the bread. We raised Over $400.00.
NAPLAN
Our Grade 7 and 9 students have completed the NAPLAN testing. We know students during this schedule may have been a little more fatigued than normal and will need some rest and relaxation time after school and on the weekends. Thank you to Mrs Lovitt and Miss Lovegrove for all your work to co-ordinate NAPLAN and our whole school community who supported the testing schedule.
Cross Country
Our cross country was held on Tuesday 24th May, 2022. It was wonderful to spend time outdoors in the Autumn sunshine with our students who were focused on working as a team to win the event but also to see individuals compete to achieve personal bests. Well done to Mrs Elliott and the Health and Physical Education team for their organisation, staff who supported the event and to the parents/guardians who watched from the spectator area to support our young people in their event. Congratulations to Esk who won the Carnival.
Excursion
It is always really great to hear when our students are representing themselves and the school in a positive manner. Our Packages of Learning (PoL) students have been engaged in a range of local excursions to see various industries and workplaces in operation. Recently we received really positive feedback from Arbre the School Work Experience Program Pilot. Congratulations to Logan P, Brielle B and Mitchell L who upheld our Department values of Respect and followed our ROCKS learning behaviour expectations. Thank you Mr Wood and MechLog for making the opportunity available to our students.
School Association
Our School Association Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday 25th May in the GLC and via teams. We are delighted to announce the elected committee.

Celebrations
Over the past 2 weeks, our Grade 7 students have completed their NAPLAN tests. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 and is the only nationwide assessment that all Australian children undertake.
It’s a measure to see whether young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.
Students have remained extremely focused during these tests and are to be commended for the dedication they have shown throughout this time. The results from these tests will be used to inform teaching and learning in the future for literacy and numeracy. Parents are also reminded that these tests are only one measure of assessment used on students and there will be plenty of other ways students will be able demonstrate their knowledge.
A big congratulations to all students who participated in last week’s Cross Country Carnival. All participants should be proud of their efforts and courage in competing for their sports house. Participation for our Grade 7’s was particularly high and we congratulate all students for showing house spirit. Congratulations to Tyler, Lincoln, Aidan, Logan, Asher, Lacie, Farishta, Lucy, Amelia and Rose who gained selection in the Inter-High team competing next week at Scotch Oakburn Park against all other secondary schools in the Northern region. We wish them all the best!
On 10th June we will have our first SWAT Day for Term 2. SWAT Day is a whole school approach to wellbeing, career and life planning. On this day we will continue to support students to identify their personal interests, values, strengths, opportunities and aspirations and teach them how to use this knowledge to make decisions about their future learning, work and life opportunities.
Respectful relationships underpin our positive and diverse school culture. We invite contact between home and school. Most of you will have received an email and/or phone call from your child’s class teacher. The relationships we develop with you are very important to support your child in their learning journey. Grade Focus
As the winter months are upon us, we are focusing on ensuring our Grade 7s are in full school uniform. As part of our winter uniform, students are allowed to wear a winter skirt with navy stockings and a blue shirt. In addition to this grey trousers or shorts may also be worn. Students are encouraged to wear their spray jackets and/or woollen or rugby jumpers to keep warm. It should be noted that beanies and hoodies are not part of our school uniform and are not to be worn to school. Students can layer, for example singlets underneath their uniform as extra layers, however these should not be visible from the outside.
Another one of our Grade foci is sensible behaviour which is one of our ROCKS expectations. Our students have been well-behaved with their learning however, sensible behaviour is particularly important at break times, before and after school. Sensible behaviour is one of our most important ROCKS expectations. This is because it encompasses respect and ensures that our students are making positive decisions about the way they conduct themselves. This helps them to remain safe and healthy.
Being organised is a transferable skill that can be used in most settings. For students, being organised is particularly important since it helps them learn how to prioritise activities, set and achieve goals and reduce stress. Having good organisational skills also makes it easier to collaborate with others and helps increase opportunity for teaching and learning.
Grade 7 will undergo an organisation blitz over the next 2 weeks. This has been introduced to ensure all students are ready for learning across all subject areas.
Grade 7 teachers are looking for students to:
- Arrive to class on time.
- Arrive with the correct equipment – pens, pencils, ruler, calculator, charged iPad.
- Use recess and lunch time for toilet breaks.
Celebrations
Congratulations to a number of Grade 8 students who assisted Mrs Crawford with the painting of the school mural. This event, which was held in consultation with Launceston City Council gave students at Kings Meadows High School the chance to design and create a mural on the large wall outside of the MDT block. I know that all students involved enjoyed the experience and thank you to Mrs Crawford for organising it. The annual KMHS cross country was run last week and it was fantastic to see such a high level of engagement from all students but particularly from the Grade 8 cohort. Special mentions to Noah (1st), Thomas (2nd) and Ali (3rd) in the boys event and to Meleyah (1st), Lucy (2nd) and Iris (3rd) in the girls event. Good luck to these students and the other students chosen to represent KMHS in the upcoming NHSSA cross country carnival. We have no doubt that they will do so with pride.

Grade Focus
The Grade 8 cohort has been continuing to focus on organisation and arriving at class in a timely manner. A reminder that when the music starts to play, this is an indication for students to move towards the grade area, organise their equipment for the upcoming blocks and to move to their classes quickly and efficiently. This allows teachers to begin classes on time and to maximise learning opportunifor all students.
Celebrations
Congratulations to all Grade 9 students who are continuing the high standards they have set for themselves in Term 2. It is fantastic to see students engaged in their learning and understanding the importance of developing into a respectful senior student here at Kings Meadows High School. The Grade 9 teaching team will continue to encourage our students to work hard and take every opportunity that is presented to them this term.
NAPLAN Testing
Congratulations to all Grade 9’s on their dedication to NAPLAN testing. The commitment and work ethic during the two weeks of testing was outstanding.
Congratulations
Well done Grace Weldon for winning the best on ground medal for the NTJFA Rep side last weekend.
Cross Country
Congratulations to the following Grade 9 students who have been selected to compete next Tuesday at the NHSSA Cross Country Carnival. We wish them all the best:
Javed Abdul Hakeem, Riley Howard, Cadel Foster, Jonty Groves, Jaydyn Harback (reserve), Grace Weldon, Lucy Smith, Alyssa Dennis, Stella Orders, Ashlyn Garwood (reserve).
Grade Focus
The Grade 9 focus for this term will be centred around how to be a respectful member of the Kings Meadows High School Community. We have emphasised the importance of being proud of your school, looking after our fantastic facilities, wearing uniform with pride and being respectful to all members of our school community. An important point we are focussing on is being a respectful member of the Kings Meadows High School Community extending outside the school gates. We want each and every student to build upon our school's already positive reputation. Our students are now in Grade 9 - senior school. Staff will be reminding students to be exemplary role models for the younger students. A strong focus will be placed upon being a good person and looking out for all members of our school community.

Celebrations
It’s hard to believe we are already approaching the halfway mark of Term 2 – time flies! In Grade 10, students have been busy with their learning, their leadership and their extra-curricular activities. We have quite a few causes for celebration in our grade, including the following:
Grade 10 students should be congratulated on their efforts during their last ever Cross Country at KMHS! We were impressed with the participation and the encouragement students provided to the younger grades. Special mention to Lachlan Oliver who broke the Grade 10 Boy’s record. The top three boys for Grade 10 were Lachlan Oliver, Harry Darsaklis and Riley Nason. The top three girls for Grade 10 were Bonnie Talbot, Jaslyn Freestone and Klarissa Watson. We have a number of students who will be representing us at the Inter-High Cross Country and we wish them the best of luck. Our house captains should also be commended for their excellent organisation and leadership on this day.
The Prefect Board, along with Miss Hart, are proud to report that their World’s Greatest Shave fundraising efforts saw a total of just under $5000 raised! This is a phenomenal effort and as a grade team, we are so incredibly proud of the students who bravely shaved their heads for this very worthy cause. The event would not have been as successful as it was without the excellent leadership of our students and the time given up by our staff members. A huge ‘thank you’ to all involved.
On Election Day, a Democracy Barbecue was held at KMHS. Some of our Grade 10 students volunteered their time to help fundraise. We wish to thank Lincoln Hampton, Adut Yel, Maggie Robins and Zavier Langerak for their work on this day.
There has been a Beacon Business Card challenge running this term, lead by the Beacon Student Ambassadors and Mrs Selby. It has been great to see students getting into the spirit of the competition and raising our awareness of local business and industry! Well done especially to 10C who are in the lead!
Recently, Logan Peake, Brielle Banks and Mitchell Long attended a work exposure opportunity in the forestry industry and received outstanding feedback from the event organiser around how well they represented our school and how well they participated.
There are many exciting events and opportunities coming up this term for our students – we urge parents & carers to keep an eye on the calendar dates in the newsletter to stay in the loop!
Grade Focus
Our Grade focus is getting our Grade 10 Agreement forms signed and focusing on making positive choices around attendance, uniform, effort, organisation and conduct.

Following the 2020–21 Tasmanian Review into Reporting to Families, new reporting requirements will begin in Tasmanian Government Schools (Kindergarten to Grade 10) from 2022.
- The 2022 Communicating Learning Progress with Families Policyoutlines the new requirements.
- To view the recommendations from the Review access the Review into Reporting to Families Report.
A Review into Reporting to Families took place between July 2020 and March 2021.
School reports communicate to families their child’s learning progress and achievement.
The previous arrangements for reporting to families have been in place since 2007. The Review considered if these arrangements still meet learner and family needs.
The Review was underpinned by:
- The development of the Department of Education (DoE) Assessment Strategy 2020-2023. One of the key actions being to undertake a Review into Reporting to Families.
What to expect in your child’s report in 2022
- In 2022, the first phase of implementation will focus on using a 9-point scale on the twice-yearly summative reports for Australian Curriculum CORE subjects.
- In 2022, school course subjects outside of CORE learning areas will implement a 5 Word Descriptor of achievement in that subject.
- Detailed information regarding the changes can be accessed in the following resource available from the Department of Education.
The Policy and Procedures only apply to K–10. Years 11 and 12 reporting requirements will be refined with an aim to implement in 2024, in line with implementation of the Years 9 to 12 Curriculum.
Opportunity for families to discuss their child’s report will be available in Week 10 of Term 2.
If you would like to discuss the changes in your child’s report prior to the reporting period, please contact the school.

PREFECT REPORT - WORLD'S GREATEST SHAVE:
On Friday 20th May, our Kings Meadows High School students participated in raising money for the World’s Greatest Shave, an event run by the Leukaemia Foundation. The Shave gave us an opportunity to support those with cancer and contribute towards making wigs for people suffering from it, as well as donating extra hair to be used for cleaning oil spills. Six students volunteered to shave their heads – Angus Button, Hudson Langerak, Ben Thornton, Jakob Anderson, Alex Hodge and Amir Rahmi. From their collective donations from peers, they managed to raise an amazing $4,375.00 towards the cause.
Sara, a local hairdresser from Kameleon Hair and Beauty Salon in Kings Meadows, volunteered her time and services for this event. KH&BS has volunteered for our last few World’s Greatest Shaves and deserve a big thank you for their ongoing support.
The Shave took place in the school drama room and with COVID-19 restrictions in mind, students watched the livestream of the Shave from their class teacher rooms. The event was a great success and the money raised has already been donated to the Leukaemia Foundation.
At the other side of the school, our student leaders ran a lunch time barbecue, selling sausages, burgers and drinks. The hairspray station, for a gold coin donation, was also a big hit and many students returned to class with bright, glittery hair and the $433.40 from these events also went to the Leukaemia Foundation.
Overall the school raised $4818.40, making it out most successful Shave ever! Over seven years of participating in the World’s Greatest Shave, Kings Meadows is proud to have donated a whopping $19,864.20 to the cause.
When asked their reasoning behind shaving their heads, this year’s participants Angus, Hudson, Ben, Jakob, Alex and Amir, all said that they all knew that as their hair will grow back, it was worth cutting their locks for a cause like this and are all very proud to have done their part to help many brave cancer patients on their journey. By raising money and donating hair to the Leukaemia Foundation, Kings Meadows is not just fighting cancer, but also helping to save our environment.
Hair is an environmentally friendly alternative used to clean up oil spills out at sea and on land, able to soak up around five times its own weight in oil. It is a renewable, natural resource that doesn’t require any harmful drilling to obtain. The hair clippings from Kings Meadow High School’s World’s Greatest Shave participants will be sent to an organisation called Sustainable Salons who make products designed to mop up oil and help keep our precious environment healthy.
Overall, the event was a massive succesa nd we would like to give a huge thanks to the participating students, behind-the-scenes workers and school leaders. An enormous thankyou to Sara from Kameleon Hair and Beauty Salon, as well as Banjos and Kmart for your generous donations. Your support is greatly appreciated and we couldn’t have done it without you.
Kings Meadows High School looks forward to continuing to do whatever we can to support the worldwide fight against cancer in the future and we cannot wait to see the results of our World’s Greatest Shaves that will take place in the years to come.

PACKAGES OF LEARNING TO CRISP BROS:
Crisp Bros metal fabrication business in Kings Meadows hosted a tour for the Packages of Learning students on 18th May. Brendan gave an informative talk about the machinery and processes used in the metal fabrication process. He talked about the attributes and skills employees need to be able to demonstrate, also maintain a high focus on safe practices as jobs are completed.
Past Packages of Learning student Paige Murray, now a first-year apprentice, talked about the high and low points of working in the industry and noted she was really enjoying it. As the first female apprentice in the business, she is paving the way for more women to join the metal fabrication industry.
Students from Packages of Learning would like to thank Brendan, along with Paige, for taking time to share their knowledge and look forward to continuing partnerships with the business through work experience program.
2022 KMHS CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL:
What an awesome day it was for this year’s KMHS Cross Country Carnival. In near perfect conditions for running, we were able to return to our traditional format of carnivals with the whole school out together for the event. The course was in great condition with not too much mud underfoot and this allowed for some great times in some age groups.
Continuing from their dominant performance in previous years, Esk was the winning house on the day for the fifth year in a row! They really are proving to be a dominant force in the distance running events. Congratulations to all participants from ESK house! It was fantastic to see such great participation from all houses across the age groups which a close tousle for 2nd, 3rd and 4th places between Lomond, Nevis and Tamar. Final house points were as follows:
Esk – 499
Tamar – 408
Nevis – 314
Lomond - 264
A special thanks to our parents and family members who supported all participants on the day. It was fantastic to allow spectators back into the school. The House Captains are happy to report they raised over $250 on the BBQ which will go back into the school! A further thank you to all the student helpers through the course of the day.
Thank you to the HPE team, House Captains and other staff who helped organise the day, making the carnival a positive and exciting event for all students.

PACKAGES OF LEARNING WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITY:
After an information session provided by Arbre Training and Careers Hub, which was presented by Denise and Sam, Packages of Learning students were invited to apply for places in a School Forestry Work Experience Program.
Three students were selected from KMHS to join students from five other schools. The programme took place over three days and the students had many opportunities to find out more about the industry. Local businesses hosted our students and gave very positive feedback on the way they applied themselves within the programme.
We would like to thank everyone involved in the programme for making it such a rewarding and memorable insight into the industry.
Brielle Banks, Mitchell Long, Logan Peake and Packages of Learning Class.
On Tuesday 17th May all 10 Beacon Student Ambassadors participated in a workshop run by the Beacon Foundation representatives – Nick and Jake. Students were asked to participate to be a ‘student voice’ in regard to work readiness programs that Beacon assist the school with. The students were extremely vocal and willing to elaborate on the survey questions asked of them. It is exciting that we were invited as one of only 3 schools in the state to be canvassed by the Foundation – who will be piloting a new program in 2023. Students' input from the workshop will help build and inform the pilot program.
The Beacon Foundation would also like to get parents and carers the chance to voice their thoughts and opinions on work readiness and work experience opportunities provided at High School. Below is a link which takes you to a short survey. Kings Meadows High School has a strong relationship with the Beacon Foundation and it would be great for them to hear from our Parent Body in regard to opportunities and programs.
