Athletics Carnival:
It most certainly was a delightful week at Kings Meadows High last week with the annual Athletics Carnival being the main attraction of the week. As usual Day 1 was held at Kings Meadows in fine conditions and great spirits. The end of Day 1 saw Esk slightly in front on points and although there were some weary athletes there was a keen appetite for Day 2 to arrive.
St Leonards certainly didn’t disappoint again this year and it is a wonderful opportunity for our students to be able to compete on the synthetic track. It was such a wonderful atmosphere with so many students supporting and encouraging each other. It was lovely to receive many compliments about our students and their conduct from a wide variety of parents, observers and staff. The carnival saw records broken (see report further in newsletter) fantastic spirit and sportsmanship with Nevis edging out at the end to take victory.
Thank you to all staff and students for making the two days such a success and a big thank you to Mrs Elliott and the HPE team for all their amazing work in coordinating the days.
Teddy Bears Picnic:
Every year our senior Working with Children and Child Studies students assist with the annual Teddy Bears Picnic in the City Park which is conducted by Playgroup Tasmania. Our students provide games, entertainment and the ever-popular face painting stall for the attendees. I know the day was busy but an exciting one for our students. Thankyou to Mrs Selby and Ms Vernon for all their work in supporting our students to participate.
T20 Cricket Gala Day:
On 24th October we had an enthusiastic group of young ladies participate in the Girls Gala Cricket Day accompanied by Miss Males as coach and mentor. Our girls are very passionate about their sport and we are always well represented in cricket. Thanks to Miss Males for your ongoing support and mentoring of our teams and well done to all participants for continuing to represent our school so well.
Climate Action Group:
We have a recently formed a very enthusiastic group of students focussing on climate change and the environment and what we can do to assist in our school environment and continue to build awareness around this important issue within our school community. They have been proactive in looking at packaging and recycling options in our school and have even had guests in to speak with them. I know they are keen to spread the message and continue to build awareness around what we all can do to make a difference in our environment. Keep an eye out for facebook posts and newsletter information. Well done to all involved and to Mrs Geale, Mrs Ritchie, Ms Cooper and Mrs Casey for their support.
School Association Bunnings BBQ Assistance:
As a school community we have a very small but committed group of parents who meet once a month as your representatives on the School Association Committee. Part of their agenda is to support our school and students financially for participation in representative teams and another hugely important financial support is the King and Crown Scholarships that are awarded to a student from each of our incoming primary schools. They do not do a huge amount of fundraising but need to cover some of these costs. They are running a Bunnings BBQ at Kings Meadows on Saturday 30th November and are need of support. Support can be either in donations or in time to assist on the day. Please see the flyer below and I know that any support (which is ultimately for our students and school) is greatly appreciated.
Congratulations to:
- Jessica Hunter for having her artwork hung in the Young Archie’s exhibition. Her work was selected from hundreds of entries to be showcased in the exhibition.
- Abbie Butler for breaking the 2000m steeplechase State record for the Under 20 age group. She is now the number 1 ranked under 18 in Australia and in the top 20 in world rankings.

I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate two of our staff members, Mrs Emma Dobson and Mrs Kerri Kleinig for their recent successful Hardie Fellowship application to study in 2020 in the USA for a short period of time. This is a very prestigious award to receive statewide. Their inquiry is around blended learning and contemporary learning spaces and how these impact on student wellbeing and outcomes. We look forward to learning more about this work as their inquiry progresses. Congratulations again.
Student Awards Achievements:
On Wednesday 23rd October I had the pleasure of attending the DoE Student Awards Ceremony held at the Tailrace Centre. These awards recognised aspiration and achievement in NAPLAN and Australian Curriculum assessments in English and Maths and growth in progress over time, each school having one Growth Award recipient who has been identified based on the above-mentioned results. They were presented to every student by the Minister for Education Mr Jeremy Rockliff at a prestigious ceremony.
Congratulations to :

Celebrations
Recently, our Grade 7 students participated in their first Athletics Carnival at Kings Meadows High School. These were two fantastic days full of fun, sunshine, encouragement and great participation. We are proud of the way our students demonstrated great courage and resilience throughout the carnival, with many students attempting new and unfamiliar activities and events. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Athletics Carnival for the Grade 7 teaching team was watching students supporting their peers and participating in events, despite their nerves, in order to win points for their respective house. The team spirit was excellent and many staff commended our Grade 7 cohort on the kind way in which they interacted with each other throughout these two days. We would like to congratulate our students for their wonderful efforts throughout the carnival, and their determination and commitment.

We had a number of students put themselves out of their comfort zone by nominating for either Beacon Student Ambassador positions or the Cambodia overseas trip. This demonstrated to us terrific connectedness to the school from all these students and we are certainly very proud of them.
This was magnified during the Athletics Carnival as students worked together over the two days, showing constant support and encouragement, irrespective of ability level.
The way that our cohort work together is extremely pleasing to see and shows us that the students have developed the relationships to help each other succeed entering the senior school.

Well done to all our Grade 10 students who participated well in their last Athletics Carnival at KMHS. It was fantastic to see the effort that was put into wearing their house colours and that they gave it their all in each of the events. A special mention must go to our House Captains who held their final house meetings last week. It was said that it was some of their finest work yet in motivating their houses to participate and do whatever it takes to win the final carnival shield. Tamar House’s presentation was particularly impressive.
Grade Focus
For the next few weeks the Grade 10’s major focus will be on their enrolment to either Launceston College, Newstead College, into fulltime work, obtaining an apprenticeship or Tafe. Last week all Grade 10 students completed their transition plans in preparation for their enrolment. This week students received information about their enrolment times so that parents/carers who are able, can attend those enrolment interviews. A reminder to parents that if they wish to attend their child’s enrolment interview to sign in at the office and from there you will be directed to the enrolment spaces for each college. Your child will meet you at that space 10 minutes prior to their interview time.
Students will also begin to receive information in regards to their leaver’s activities so we would encourage parents/carers to ask their child if they have received any additional information about these over the next few weeks. The Grade 10 team will do their best to keep everyone informed of key dates. If you have any questions or concerns please contact your child’s class teacher.

What can you tell us about this piece of work?
In English last term, we read The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare and then watched 10 Things I Hate About You. We were then given a choice of assignments and I chose to write a script. It’s about Edith Clarke who is the first female electrical engineer and it’s written with Shakespearean language. I chose Edith Clarke because I wanted to learn more about her.
What is your favourite thing about English?
That there are no barriers in writing. You can be really free with it and explore different topics, particularly real world events.
What are you working on at the moment?
We are completing a novel study through reciprocal reading groups where we get discuss the book and what we interpret from it. My class is reading Poppy which is based in WW1, which we are learning about in HaSS as well.
What are you reading at the moment?
The Wicked Will Rise by Danielle Paige. It is a spin-off of The Wizard of Oz.
What is your favourite book and why?
Once by Morris Gleitzman. You learn lots from it. You don’t need to have any prior understanding of WW2 because of his attention to detail with the characters and setting is amazing.
What are some books that you would really like to read?
Autobiographies and biographies (like Edith Clarke)
A Long Way to the Top

ACT ONE
Scene 1
We begin in the Clarke house EDITH, AGNES and JANE are sitting in EDITH’S bed, she is opening her letter of acceptance into the University of Wisconsin- Madison.
AGNES: Sister, you must open it now, we have been waiting here far too long. It’s almost supper time.
EDITH: I know, I’m just terrified! I’ve spent my whole life dealing with my learning disabilities to get here, I have no other options. If I don’t get in, I don’t know what I’ll do… (To herself, concerned) how will I tell our Uncle?
JANE: (hearing this) he will be just as supportive as when you first applied, sister. Besides, you’re sure to get accepted, there’s no way they would turn down the smartest person I know, that would be foolish.
EDITH: maybe you’re right, and even if that is false, surely I do deserve it considering our consequences, right?
AGNES: There’s no one out there who deserves this more than you, Edith. While I still don’t understand why you want to do a man’s job, I ‘m not going to stop you, you seem to know what you’re doing.
ELIZABETH enters
ELIZABETH: Has she opened it yet?
AGNES: (disappointed) no, she hasn’t…
ELIZABETH: Well get a hurry on then, supper is almost ready and you don’t want to be late.
EDITH: I know…and I won’t…its just- (she gets cut off)
ELIZABETH snatches the envelope from EDITH’S grasp and slides her finger across the top revealing the letter. AGNES smirks, enthusiastically.
JANE: (to Edith) well she has never been one to wait around.
AGNES: Well, what does it say?
ELIZABETH: “Dear Edith Clarke, we are happy to announce that you have been accepted into the University of Wisconsin-Madison for Civil Engineering. We look forward to see you at orientation next month. Congratulations.”
EDITH: (in shock) No…
AGNES: Yes! Well done Edith I knew you could do it!
EDITH: (snatching the letter back) I don’t believe it I actually got in!
Scene 2
EDITH, AGNES, JANE, ELIZABETH, BROTHER 1, and UNCLE sit around the dining table in silence as they usually do while they eat.
AGNES: (struggling to keep it to herself) Edith has an announcement to make.
UNCLE: You know the rules at the table, no talking during supper dear.
AGNES: I know but-
UNCLE: I’m sure whatever it is, can wait until after.
AGNES: But-
UNCLE: Enough!
EDITH: I got accepted, uncle.
Scene 3
3 weeks have passed, EDITH enters into her new school for the first time, ELIZABETH enters behind her. Hundreds of students are whizzing past
EDITH: (to herself) Finally, I’m here. All these people are just like me, same interests, same passions, same minds. If only I could have come here sooner, been in this environment with people who celebrate my brain and don’t make fun of it or call me strange. No one here can undermine me for what I love, because they love it too. I wonder where I would be now if I didn’t take this route, if I had listened to the many people calling me weird or un lady-like because if what I’m good at. Would I be still at home with my sisters, or would I be married by now and living my days at home cooking and cleaning for my husband? Not that I mind cooking or cleaning, but I want to have the eventful life that my parents couldn’t have and do what I love. (to ELIZABETH) Okay, I think I’m ready. Let’s go in.
ELIZABETH: I am so very proud of you Edith, I wish I had your incredible mind and drive, gosh I’d sure be better off than taking care of our 8 siblings’ day and night. Anyway, we shan’t be late, we don’t want you to look bad on your first day.
They exit
Scene 4
EDITH enters carrying many books and takes a seat in the lecture theatre
EDIT: (to herself) Huh, there doesn’t seem to be many women here, as a matter of fact I haven’t seen many women at all.
Lesson goes on
PROFESSOR: Now, who can tell me the earliest example of a scientific approach to physical and mathematical problems applicable to civil engineering?
pause
Edith’s hand unconfidently shoots up
PROFESSOR; Yes, young lady in the back. You must be Edith (to himself, muttering) one of the only young ladies in this class.
EDITH: Yes sir, the earliest example is Archimedes in the 3rd Century BC
All eyes turn to EDITH and she watches their faces turn cold and dirty, some let out a chuckle
PROFESSOR: You are correct, Archimedes Screw is a good example of this…
The lesson continues and finishes, EDITH gets up to leave
CLASSMATE/BULLY 1: Can you believe a girl is in this class? Engineering is NOT for girls, and to think she even had the nerve to raise her hand in OUR class.
CLASSMATE/BULLY 2: There’s no way she’ll make it through a week here, she should just go home now to save her the grief. Start cleaning and cooking or something, like they are supposed to.
CLASSMATE/BULLY 3: Watch out, soon she’ll be demanding equal pay or women’s rights.
They chuckle off
EDITH: (to herself) If only my classmates were who I imagined them to be, I guess deep down I knew they would be just like the rest. No matter, they are just jealous that I, a girl, is smarter than them. (convincing herself, unsure) Yes, that’s what it is.
Scene 5
One week later, same class. The bullying has been going on ever since but directly to her face now. EDITH walks in with her head down, trying not to get recognised. BULLIES/CLASSMATES enter
EDITH: Oh no, not again. (picks up her pace)
BULLY: Look who it is, Edith Clarke.
BULLY 2: Is she still here?
BULLY 3: Looks like it, what are you still doing here? Huh?
EDITH doesn’t answer, keeps walking
BULLY 1: My friend here asked you a question little lady
EDITH: Uh...um I- (she gets cut off)
them combined. (he winks)
EDITH: Oh, thank you sir. (she forces a fake smile onto her face before turning away)
Professor looks concerned, he knows why Edith is being treated badly and feels he must do something to help.
Scene 6
EDITH walks out the front of the university building looking around, she spots AGNES, JANE and ELIZABETH running towards her. AGNES squeals when she sees EDITH. They share a long group hug.
JANE: Oh Edith, we’ve missed you so much
EDITH: I’ve missed you girls so much too, what’s it like back home? Are you all well?
AGNES: Its fine I guess, normal. Just no Edith (she hugs Edith again)
ELIZABETH: Enough about us, what have you been up to here?
EDITH: Well, my classes are challenging, but I like that. It’s the first time in my life where I really have to work hard to find answers and my professors give me work that I find difficult. It’s wonderful. However, I’m finding myself being bullied again. I thought coming here would be different, that the people would accept me because I’m just like them, but it’s worse than I’ve ever had before. I don’t know… I don’t know if I can take it much more.
AGNES: Come home then, Edith. Help take care of all of us!
EDITH: Maybe I should, they are right. Girls aren’t supposed to do engineering, but I’m doing it anyway, it’s not fair for me to take a man’s job from them.
ELIZABETH slaps EDITH across the face
ELIZABETH: Are you stupid? You’re really going to listen to jealous boys and let them decide what you’re doing with your life? Edith, you’re better than that. You have been bullied your entire life and it has only made you stronger and more eager to prove them all wrong. So, prove them wrong, do something big. Become the first female Electrical Engineer or something. I know if you set your mind to it, you’ll get there.
JANE: You’ve made it this far, Edith. Don’t give up now.
AGNES: So, you’re not coming home?
AGNES, JANE and ELIZABETH wait anxiously for Edith’s response
EDITH: No, I’m not. I’m staying here whether they like it or not. My professor is happy with my work and his opinion is much more important than three little boys. They can bully me all they like, but I’ve dealt with that my whole life. What’s a little more? Thank you, girls, for coming, (to ELIZABETH) and thank you for believing in me and helping me believe in myself. I like it here, and I’m going to prove all who bullied me wrong, the world is my oyster.
AGNES is disappointed but happy, JANE and ELIZABETH smile, proudly.
Scene 7
EDITH walks confidently through the school to her class, no longer lingering on dirty looks or whispers and smiles as she walks past BULLIES/CLASSMATES. She takes a seat at the front of the class and begins getting her supplies ready for the lesson.
PROFESSOR: Edith, I’m glad to see you up the front. I’m convinced you’re the only one that really listens in my classes.
They laugh
EDITH: I’m trying my best, though I feel like I have to work twice as hard to be good enough for this school. However, I don’t mind it, I find it makes the end result more rewarding.
PROFESSOR: Wise words, Edith. I have a proposition for you, if you’re interested.
EDITH: What kind of proposition?
PROFESSOR: A job, Edith. I happen to be close friends with AT and T Research Engineer Dr George Cambell, and he needs a computer assistant.
EDITH: Goodness gracious (getting excited and nervous)
PROFFESOR: He asked me if I knew anyone that would be good enough and up for the job, and you came to my mind first, Edith. I have spoken about you in the past and well, he was hesitant to employ a…well…a- (cut off)
EDITH: A woman?
PROFESSOR: Well, yes.
EDITH: I understand his hesitancy, but is he still interested?
PROFESSOR: Very much so, after I showed him some of your work that all went away. He would really like you working for him. You would continue your studies here of course.
EDITH fails to hide her excitement
EDITH: I don’t know what to say, thank you so much, sir!
PROFESSOR: My pleasure, you have an amazing mind and I wouldn’t wish for it to go to waste. You need to take that brain of yours into the real world, where real engineers will appreciate it, not foolish young men who have nothing better to do than bully others.
Pause
EDITH: my whole life no one has ever praised my mind, just made fun of me for it. Things are turning around for me, I can feel it.
PROFESSOR: You’ll go far Edith Clarke, and when you do, don’t forget about me.
EDITH: Of course.
Scene 8
It is now 1919, EDITH is in a radio station being interviewed. A REPORTER enters
REPORTER: Okay, Edith. Are you ready?
EDITH: I believe so
REPORTER: Wonderful, we are on air. (his voice shifts) Good afternoon America, I’m Elman B. Meyers and welcome to my radiooo show. Today we’ve reached a top of 58°F here ladies and gentlemen and tomorrow it’s supposed to reach a nice 64°F. Now the boring part of the show is over I can introduce our guest for this evening, Edith Clarke. How are you Edith?
EDITH: (nervous) I’m well thanks
REPORTER: Wonderful, now Edith, you went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison to study Civil Engineering what was that like?
EDITH: Challenging, but I had very supporting professors and teachers guiding me through my years there.
REPORTER: Now, females aren’t usually interested in Engineering, what made you choose this path?
EDITH: Well, from a young age I’ve struggled with some aspects of learning, but science and maths have always come easily to me, and excited me. I was always tormented for choosing engineering, but I’ve learnt to not let it get to me. At one point I almost gave up, and it was my sister, Elizabeth who talked me out of it. I’m very glad I didn’t quit then, because I would never have made it to where I am now.
REPORTER: And how far you have come, I am sitting here with the first female Electrical Engineer, how does it feel to have a title like that?
EDITH: I am very proud to be the first female Electrical Engineer and saying it aloud I can barely believe it. However, I don’t let it get into my head. I have worked so hard to get to where I am today, and I am not going to ruin that with my ego. I will wake up everyday as an engineer. Not the first female engineer, just an engineer.
REPORTER: Inspiring, Edith, truly inspiring. So, do you think now you have created a movement? For employers and fellow females passionate for engineering. Wouldn’t there be a demand for female engineers now that there is so much press surrounding it? Imagine the publicity for a company that hires a female engineer now, it would be huge news.
EDITH: There is no demand for women engineers, as such, as there are for women doctors; but there’s always a demand for anyone who can do a good piece of work.
END OF ACT 1
”There is no demand for women engineers, as such, as there are for women doctors; but there’s always a demand for anyone who can do a good piece of work.”
- Edith Clarke
What a fantastic two days of House competitions we had last week in the Inter-House Athletic Carnival. A brilliant display of athleticism, participation and teamwork was shown by all, with many students breaking personal best scores, times and producing their best ever performance on the day. Our students behaved impeccably and took on every challenge thrown at them, with participation levels at an all-time high.
A special congratulations should go to the following students who were record breakers over the course of the carnival:

Competition between the four houses Nevis, Tamar, Lomond and Esk was tight over both days with not many points separating them at the completion of Day 1. In the end it was Nevis who came out on top with 2766 points narrowly beating last year’s winner Esk on 2581, Tamar on third place 2431 and Lomond on 2412. Congratulations to Nevis competitors on a fine two days of competition.
Carnivals cannot be as successful as ours without the combined effort from a team of people. A massive thank you must go to the HPE Team for arriving a school early on both days for set up and for all of their work prior to the carnival helping organise such a great event. We would also like to thank our parent helpers Mr Brett Gillow and Mr Jamie Howard for their tireless efforts over the carnival. Your expertise and experience in running Athletics Carnivals was greatly appreciated. Finally a big thankyou must also go to all parents and friends who supported us on the day.
