As the winter weather is now well and truly upon us, it is timely to remember to continue to take steps for our own health and wellbeing. Although the impact of COVID does not appear to be as severe as the last two years, the experiences we have all shared have taught us to cover coughs and sneezes, maintain good hand hygiene and stay away from others when unwell. We need students at school as often as possible. However, if students are genuinely unwell, they should stay at home and parents and carers should inform us so that the absence is explained. We record attendance for every lesson throughout the day and are required to use particular codes for various types of absences. We are also required to send letters home at particular attendance thresholds. If you are finding it challenging to get your child to school, we certainly want to work in a supportive partnership to enable this to happen.
While speaking about health, on Monday, immunisations were conducted for Year 7 and Year 10 students. Thank you to Assistant Principal, Claire Lovitt for co-ordinating this. We have been informed that vaccination rates have dropped in the community over the last few years. It might be a timely reminder to check on the vaccination status of everyone in our families and check to see we are up to date. I know from personal experience that when I recently needed a tetanus shot, I had no idea when my last one occurred!
Last week, we had a number of our dance students participating in the Launceston Competitions. We have a very strong dance program at Kings Meadows High School and some very talented dancers. They have certainly put in considerable time with rehearsals. Thank you to Belinda Selby for the great work she does with our dance students - see report later in this newsletter.
Last week we welcomed Wendy Jacobsen to our administration team. Wendy will be replacing Kate Gibbons while she takes maternity leave. We certainly wish Kate and her family all the best for the next stage. I am sure everyone will welcome Wendy as she settles into a new role, in a new school and in a new State.
With winter sport commencing this week it is timely to remind students and families of some expectations. Representing our school in sports teams is a privilege not a right and, as such, we have high standards for all our student representatives. It is important that students understand that they are not only representing themselves but our whole school community in the public arena. While I am certainly supportive of fierce competition and striving to win, sport has many other benefits to physical health, life skills such as teamwork and personal organisation and discipline. Sport should also be fun! We expect students to be prepared for all games, play fairly, accept the decision of umpires and referees (which are often hard to get) and to participate to the best of their ability to ensure they are not letting their team down. Students participating in teams should also be demonstrating high levels of participation and effort in Health and Physical Education classes. I wish all individuals and teams an enjoyable and successful winter sport experience for this year. Thank you to the many teachers who manage and coach teams and to all those other people who enable the Northern High Schools Sports Association (NHSSA) rosters to run successfully. I have included a link to the updated website for the NHSSA, Home - NHSSA
As a result of the recent Inter-High Athletics Carnival, we had 16 students selected for the State Athletics Carnival last Friday. Just to be selected is a wonderful achievement. Congratulations to all these students. I am sure they represented themselves and our school with pride and distinction.
Toward the end of last term, we advertised for nominations to fill vacancies on our School Association Committee. We also advertised our Annual General Meeting (AGM) but were unable to form a quorum. This was rescheduled for Tuesday 16 May at 7pm. Under the Education Act 2016 we are required to have a School Association Committee. The Association is a very important opportunity for all members of the community to work together and to foster co-operation. We are always looking to encourage more people to come along to committee meetings or to join sub-committees, from time to time, when they are formed. Thank you to the staff, parents and students who have already contributed in this way and I look forward to welcoming some new faces too. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or wish to discuss further.
The rising number of children and young people vaping is a growing issue of concern in our community. Electronic cigarettes (vapes) can be appealing to young people due to bright colours and flavours. But no vapes are safe as they are often full of harmful chemicals and nicotine. For this reason, vapes can be addictive and harmful for lungs, brain development and general health. It is important to talk to your children about vaping. Try to be understanding, compassionate and non-judgemental as you support them to learn more about the dangers of vaping or in seeking support to quit. Information on what vaping is, the impacts and how to support your child is available on the new Department for Education, Children and Young People webpage on vaping, which can be accessed here:
https://www.decyp.tas.gov.au/about-us/projects/child-student-wellbeing/vaping/
In the near future, teachers will commence collating assessments to enable communicating learning progress to parents. As part of this process students will receive a report that outlines their progress against the Australian Curriculum using a nine-point scale. This scale has a marker to indicate your child’s learning achievement at a point in time. Some students will also be assessed against goals in their Learning Plan. Parents can support their child be sharing how they value education, encouraging them to complete work to the best of their ability and ensuring all work is submitted on time. We can never underestimate the importance that a supportive home environment has on student achievement. I encourage all students to give their best in every subject, ensure the are organised for class, are punctual and, perhaps most importantly, value learning.
Regards
Cary Stocks
Principal

In this article I would like to take the time to highlight our Year 7 Student Leaders and their recent endeavours while celebrating the efforts of our teaching team and congratulating students selected to represent Northern Tasmania in the State Athletics Championships.
Leadership opportunities are crucial for Year 7 students as they help develop essential life skills such as communication, collaboration, decision-making and problem-solving. By taking on leadership roles, students learn to take initiative, work with others and develop their own unique leadership style. Moreover, Student Leaders are seen as role models by their peers, which can help promote a positive school culture and foster a sense of community. As a result, students who participate in leadership opportunities tend to have higher self-esteem, are more engaged in school and develop a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to their school community. At Kings we are committed to growing leadership opportunities for students as they transition throughout Kings Meadows High School.
This week some of our Transition Leaders visited our local primary schools to share with them what it is like to be part of the Kings Meadows High School community and to put their new leadership responsibilities into action. Having our Transition Leaders visit Year 5/6 students in different primary schools is a valuable experience for all involved. Our students provided insight and guidance on what to expect when transitioning to high school, which can help alleviate any anxieties or concerns younger students may have. Additionally, this interaction has hopefully promoted a sense of community between the primary schools and our school community, as well as creating a positive impression of Kings Meadows High School among the younger students, encouraging them to look forward to their future years with us. I would like to congratulate Ashlyn Quillerat, Coby Praciak, Aden Quillerat, Zack Perkins, Halle Ralston, Lexi Albers, Ella Fitzgerald, Ruby Foster, Ari O’Donnell, Nathan Hilbert, Gracie Burrage, Daegan Withington, Imani Davern, Amy McCormack, Bella Hammond, Alice Pattern, Lillian Morphet, Josie Evorall, Sophie Allison, Isla Walker, Jazzuri Kelly and Bella Abel for their excellent presentations and for the way they conducted themselves at Evandale, Longford, Perth, Norwood, Youngtown, Glen Dhu and Punchbowl Primary Schools. Thank you also to Mr Scott Brewer and Mrs Megan Pell for their assistance with students during the visits.

I know that Mrs Dobson has also written an article for this week’s newsletter and introduced our new Class Leaders. I would like to personally congratulate and acknowledge her efforts in leading and supporting the class leader nomination process and for the way she has worked with students and staff throughout the process. Thank you also to all our Year 7 Class Teachers who supported the nomination and voting processes in their classrooms and for their sense of teamwork throughout the process. I would also like to thank our lass tTeachers further for the efforts they have made in updating learning plans and classroom adjustments for students with a disability in Year 7 and for sharing these with parents for feedback and improvement. Thank you to all parents that have signed and returned these to school and a quick reminder to any parents who are yet to sign and return Learning Plans, can these please be returned as soon as possible.
Finally, a huge congratulations to Luke Brophy, Coby Praciak and Brodie Marshall who were selected to represent Northern Tasmania at the State Athletics Carnival on Friday last week. This is a great achievement and we are extremely proud of your efforts.
Please feel free to contact Kings Meadows High School if your child has an achievement to celebrate as it’s always great to hear stories of our students participating in outside of school events or interests and please enjoy the photos some of our transition leaders in action.

Celebrations
As we now into week 4 of Term 2 it is important to remind our students this term will be busy and we are expecting students to continue working and completing tasks in the classrooms with rigour and to a high standard. The last few weeks have been a chance for our students to start the term off fresh and consolidate their learning and be involved in all activities on offer to them. Mid-year reports are coming up this term, with that in mind we are reminding students to ensure they are completing tasks within their lesson time or following up at home if they need.
Congratulations to Sadie, Hadiseh, Roya, Teal, Olive, Peyton, Ashton, Ruby and Hailey. These students have all gained selection as a Class Leader for this term. This leadership position is a prestigious one and those students should be very proud of their selection in this role. We wish them luck working as a group with Ms Graham. Well done to all students who stepped out of their comfort zone to apply.
This Friday we have our annual Cross Country Carnival held here at school. Year 8 boys will be running at 1.30pm and Year 8 girls at 1.40pm. Parents are welcome to spectate. A viewing area in the car park on the far side of our oval has been made available for parents and friends. In our next newsletter we will be celebrating the results, announcing the house winner and Grade Champions. Good luck to all students.
Grade Focus
This term our focus for Year 8 will be Organisation. The majority of our Year 8’s are very good at being self-managers and organising themselves for their lessons. In our grade assemblies we will be reminding students to ensure they are arriving to class promptly and with all equipment required for their learning. This includes writing materials, pens, pencils, books and a charged iPad. We will be looking at an incentive scheme for each class teacher group and challenging them to be the best group in Year 8. Students are also be reminded about the importance of locking their equipment and bag in their locker and using this appropriately. The Year 8 team will be monitoring this over the next few weeks. If this same message can be delivered at home, it would be greatly appreciated.
As always, we are also encouraging our Year 8’s to display our ROCKS expectations in their interactions throughout the school, in particular focusing on the way we move around the school, interactions with staff and peers, being resilient and accountable. Well done to most of our students on the way they are conducting themselves at present.
Respectful relationships underpin our positive and diverse school culture. We invite contact between home and school. Most of you will have received an email and/or phone call from your child’s class teacher. The relationships we develop with you are very important to support your child in their learning journey. LAUNCESTON COMPETITIONS - DANCE:
On Tuesday 9 May Kings Meadows High School dance students participated in the Launceston Competitions at the Princess Theatre. The Year 8’s performed in the morning in a section of 8 pieces with LCGS, St Pats and Prospect. Five groups performed and all received really positive critiques from the adjudicator. Placings were:
2nd Place for Lacie Pearton, Rose Jones and Maddison Crawford
Highly Commended – Lucy Stone, Tahli Rabac, Ella Fish
Highly Commended – Amelia Armstrong and Zara Brooks
The others who performed: Lacie K, Gracie C, Lealani and Kaylah + Mattea, Jayda, Lucy A and Lauren also did extremely well to overcome nerves and perform well on the day, so congratulations to all.
The Year 9 and 10 students performed in the evening with the addition of the full stage and the curtain which was really special. In the senior section there were 14 groups, so it was a very tough competition including the six groups from Kings Meadows High School plus Scotch Oakburn College, three from St Patricks College, Launceston Church Grammar School and three from Prospect High School. Although Scotch took the trophy back from our win in 2022, all the groups did an amazing job. Results were:
3rd Place – Cobi Griffith, Georgie D’Alton, Alisha Van Rooyen, Jasmine Brown, Charli Merritt, Sophie Thomas, Mia Stone and Abbigale Midson.
Highly Commended – Gizaye Williams, Iris Alberti, Matilda Dawson, Lucy Oliver and Sienna Ripp.

Georgie H, Brianna W and Iealah
Thank you to parents and carers who came and supported students in the audience and also Ms Joh Breen and Ms Kate Blaubaum for their assistance on the day and night. We look forward to next year.

YEAR 11/12 AT KINGS MEADOWS HIGH SCHOOL 2024:
Students in Year 11/12 have the opportunity to study some or all of their subjects at Kings Meadows High School. In 2024, we will again be offering both our Vocational Education and Training (VET) course Certificate II in Construction Pathways and a range of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification (TASC) courses for students wishing to complete Years 11 and 12 at Kings Meadows High School. Please see information below for further details and contact the school if you have any questions re enrolment in our VET and/or TASC courses. Please also let us know if your student would like to study at Kings Meadows High School but the subjects they wish to study do not appear on our scope so we can discuss options. Please note, these offerings are subject to change based on staffing availability and student interest in 2024.
CONSTRUCTION PATHWAYS
(Tuesday & Friday at KMHS, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday can be shared enrolment with Newstead College or Launceston College if desired)
The CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways qualification gives students opportunities to learn through making as well as providing them with practical DIY skills in the allied trades.
VET courses are designed to prepare students for the workplace or further education. These courses may be particularly suited to students who are eager to gain employment and enjoy practical skills, hands on, authentic and real-life learning. This course may also suit students on a university pathway such as engineering or architecture, to enhance theoretical understanding.
The construction pathways qualification provides a pathway to the primary trades in the construction industry. Trade outcomes are predominantly achieved through an Australian Apprenticeship and this Certificate II allows for inclusion of skills suited for entry to off-site occupations in general construction. This Certificate II is designed to introduce learners to the recognised trade areas in the construction industry and provide meaningful credit in a construction industry Australian Apprenticeship.
This nationally recognised qualification comprises 10 units of competency, 5 core (the same as the colleges) and 5 electives (selected by Kings Meadows High School) along with the attainment of the White Card.
HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?
The program is offered to any student in Year 11 or 12 across the region. Enrolment in the construction VET course is subject to expression of interest and interview. Students enrolled in construction pathways qualification may choose to attend KMHS full time or do a shared enrolment with a college or another extension school.
WHY THIS PROGRAM?
The electives chosen by Kings Meadows High School are due to the high demand for these skills - bricklaying, tiling and concreting (formwork, carpentry and placement).
The sub-contractor trades provide pathways for students to work for themselves or for a building company and can be the first step towards becoming a builder.
In order to gain full qualifications (Cert III) in trades, students will need to complete an apprenticeship.
A PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR YOUR FUTURE PATHWAY
Full time students must enrol in at least four subjects in Year 11 but may choose to take more. VET Courses are equivalent to two subjects. Students have many ways to study Construction Pathways via KMHS. A full Certificate II or part Certificate (Statement of Attainment) can combine with other Kings Meadows High School courses, Virtual Learning Tasmania (VLT) offerings or a shared enrolment. Your enrolment choices should lead towards successful Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) attainment at the end of Year 12.
WHERE IN THE SCHOOL WILL I STUDY FROM?
We now have a purpose built 11/12 building with classroom, kitchenette, toilets, undercover work area, outdoor work areas and construction sheds. Students can catch any of the school buses onto campus or one of the many public buses that travel into the Kings Meadows area. For those who drive, there is car parking available where the 11/12 area is located.

The Commissioner for Children and Young People is excited to announce that our YEP! Program is officially launching on 9 May 2023. Your Engagement Place (YEP!) is a place where children and young people under the age of 18 can find ways to engage with CCYP and other organisations around Tasmania to have a voice on things that matter to them. Any child and young person aged under 18 who registers before 9 June enters the membership draw for a chance to win an iPad. Children and young people can register here.
You can check out our YEP! hub now by visiting our new CCYP website. If you are an adult and would like to keep up to date with current engagement opportunities available to children and young people in Tasmania, fill out our adult subscription form.
Should you have any questions at all about the new program or wish to promote an ethical engagement opportunity open to young Tasmanians, please do not hesitate to email us at childcomm@childcomm.tas.gov.au or call us on (03) 6166 1366.
BEACON FOUNDATION - WORK READINESS PROGRAM:
Yesterday a group of Year 10 students, who are engaging in the Beacon Foundation Work Readiness Program, had an excursion to visit three sites in Launceston. They were lucky enough to go inside the new UTAS build courtesy of Fairbrother Construction. We also toured around the Country Club Casino complex and visited the Tasmanian Institute of Sport. Thank you to the businesses who supported this fantastic opportunity to create career awareness for our young people!

An update on the progress of our senior woodwork students in their first major project - the Bedside Table. Over the past few weeks, our students have been diligently working on their projects, honing their skills in a variety of woodworking and joinery techniques.
The Bedside Table is made from Radiata Pine and features a variety of joinery methods, both hand cut and with machinery. The table also includes a sliding drawer, which requires precision and attention to detail to ensure smooth movement. I am proud to say that most of our students have even taken the extra step of woodturning their own handles, adding a personal touch to their projects.
Working with wood can be a challenging task, but our students have shown great determination and a willingness to improve themselves in this area. They have demonstrated patience, perseverance and attention to detail in their work, which are essential traits for success in any craft or trade.
As you can see from the accompanying picture, our students are finishing up their projects and again encourage families to organise collection with their child/ren promptly to ensure space for the new projects to begin. The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail is truly impressive and we are confident that these projects will be cherished for years to come.
We are incredibly proud of our senior woodwork students for their hard work and dedication to this project. They have shown that with effort and commitment, they can achieve great things in this field and encourage juniors coming through to select ‘Workshop’ subjects.
Mr Chatwin, Mr Chamberlain and Mrs Rowbottom.
The 2023 Prefect Board have been very busy starting to prepare for the return of the Kings Meadows High School Trivia Night. We would love to invite you all along to what is sure to be a fantastic night. Please get your team of eight together and RSVP to book your table so you don’t miss out on the fun!
Each year, students have the chance to run for Class Leader. This is an exciting opportunity which enables students to take on a leadership role within their grade. Class Leaders are responsible for consulting with their peers and designing grade initiatives, planning and running grade assemblies, acting as a conduit between their peers and the grade leadership & teaching team and promoting positive behaviour in our year group.
The application process required students to complete an expression of interest form, consult with their class teacher and deliver a speech in front of their class about the qualities they hoped to bring to the role if they were successful. All students in the class voted for the Class Leaders who they believed would be best suited to the role.
I would like to congratulate all students who applied for the role of Class Leader; we are so proud of you for putting your hat in the ring and taking this step on your leadership journey.
There was some close competition (and even a few ‘ties’ for positions!) and it brings me great joy to congratulate the following students on becoming Year 7 Class Leaders for 2023.

If you have an old pair of football boots that you do not need, please consider donating them back to the school. They are used for students who don’t have a pair, or for when students forget their boots on game day.
Please pass on to the office if you can assist. Thank you.
