Today we held our final school assembly for the year to recognise achievement and to farewell our Year 10 students. Congratulations to all students who received awards. You should feel content and proud of your achievements. At our school, we value excellence in all endeavours and this was certainly evident through the variety of awards distributed. I would also like to acknowledge the majority of students who turn up to school regularly, follow our school expectations and give their best to their learning. Obviously not all students can ‘win a prize’ but your contribution and positive behaviour is valued in our school community. Thank you also to the many parents and other family members who were able to come to this celebratory assembly.
Last Friday evening, the Year 10 cohort and staff enjoyed the Celebration Dinner at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, Launceston. These formal nights are always very enjoyable for our students and staff as it is often the last time they will all be in the same room together as a group. After seeing all our students dressed up and looking more adult like, it always reminds me of how far they have come since joining us in Year 7. I certainly hope that all our Year 10 students have enjoyed their final few days of high school and the celebratory events over this period. As they move to the next stage of education, training or employment, I hope they reflect positively on their time as students of Kings Meadows High School. Thank you also to the Year 10 team for all their efforts in making these last few weeks special and memorable for our senior students.
Our final S.W.A.T. (Success, Wellbeing, Aspiration and Teamwork) Day for the year was held on Friday 8 December. This day featured a combination of the Big Day Out and Healthy Me Expo. Big Day Out involves a number of outdoor activities for grade groups to participate in, a barbeque and also a variety of food vans for students to purchase food from if they desired. We also had a staff versus student basketball match and many of our awesome music students performed to the crowd. The Healthy Me Expo component of the day enables students to access a variety of organisations that provide access to health and future pathway information. This part of the day was held in the gymnasium. Thank you to Ben Killalea and Mel Hudson for their overall management of these events and to our student leaders for the work they have put into making the day a success.
On Thursday 7 December, two of our basketball teams participated in their respective grand finals. The junior boys (Garwood) team played against Queechy High School and our senior girls (Warren) team opposed Launceston Church Grammar School. Congratulations to the players of these teams as they both won their grand finals. In addition, Lennox and Hannah took out the Most Valuable Player Award for their respective teams. Thank you to all our coaches and supporters of our teams, not only for the grand finals, but throughout the roster. Thank you also to Megan Pel for her overall co-ordination of these teams.
Tomorrow, Thursday 21 December, is the final day of the school year for students. We will be taking students to Bridport for our final whole school excursion. It is a great occasion to celebrate another year of school finishing alongside of friends, other peers and staff. Thank you to Nathan Karas and Nicole Lynch for their co-ordination of this picnic’ Even though we are in December, it is still important that students are prepared for all weather conditions including sun protection. I am sure it will be a great day to finish off the year.
As is often the case at this time of year, we farewell some staff and welcome new members to our team. This year we farewell Vince Walker, Liz Self, Christian Cook and Stephanie Donnelly. While all these teachers have been with us about a year or less, they have all made a positive contribution to our school and they leave with our thanks and best wishes. Coleen Elliott is taking up an acting Advanced Skills Teacher role at Riverside after four and a half years at our school. She has been a valued member of our leadership and management team, particularly in leading the Health and Physical Education team and her respective year group. After 11 years of outstanding service to our school, Mel Hudson is transferring to Riverside High School and she leaves knowing she has been a fantastic influence on the students that she teaches and the staff that she has worked with. Our long serving Education Facility Attendant Angela Stanton has elected to retire after two decades of service. On behalf of our whole school community, I thank Angela for her excellent contribution over a sustained period and wish her all the very best for the next chapter of her life. Thank you also to our dedicated Teacher Assistants who have been with us for short term contracts over the last twelve months: India Bates, Stacey Fenton, Jess O’Dwyer, Geordie Sutton and Nathan Thuringer. I wish them well in their future pursuits.
Libraries Tasmania is delivering a Digital Skills Learning Program for DECYP parents, carers and families as part of the Digital Inclusion for 21st Century Learners Action Plan. The learning program includes community facilitators engaging with school communities and families as well as information and resources for schools to share with families. The program’s statewide delivery will start in Term 1, 2024 and will focus on communicating digitally with schools, online learning in the classroom and how families can support students online learning at home.
To boost education opportunities and narrow the digital divide, the Australian Government is providing up to 30,000 eligible families with no internet at home, a free National Broadband Network (NBN) service. Originally a 12 month commitment, the initiative has been extended, meaning the period in which a family can nominate to receive a free service is up to 31 December 2024 and the duration of free services will continue until 31 December 2025 for all existing and new families. To be eligible, a family must have a child living at home who is enrolled in an Australian school, have no active broadband service over the NBN network, live in a premise where they can access a standard NBN service and not have had an active NBN service during the previous 14 days. To check your eligibility, contact the National Referral Centre, operated by Anglicare Victoria, on 1800 954 610 (Mon–Fri, 10am–6pm AEDT), www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet.
I look forward to welcoming students back to school on Thursday 8 February, 2024. Please note that in recent years students have recommenced on a Wednesday. This has changed next year because one of the professional learning days was moved from later in the year to the beginning of the 2024 school year.
Thank you to everyone for your contribution to our school community throughout 2023. To all students, families and staff who are moving on, I wish you well for your future. I hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable break and a Merry Christmas. I look forward to seeing you in 2024 for another big year at our great school.
Regards

As the school year draws to a close, we are thrilled to extend our warmest congratulations to our remarkable Year 7 students. This year has been a journey of growth, resilience, academic achievement and we couldn't be prouder of the accomplishments of each student.
I would like to acknowledge the achievements of all Year 7 students who participated in the recent school’s triathlon held in Devonport. Congratulations to Sophie Allison, Alice Patten, George Darsaklis, Jack Mortimer and Jaspar Wichmand Wilcox for showing the courage to compete on the day and for their sense of teamwork and support for each other. Participating in a triathlon offers an unparalleled opportunity for holistic development. Beyond the physical fitness gained, students cultivate teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship, fostering a sense of camaraderie that transcended academic boundaries. This unique experience not only promotes a healthy lifestyle but also instils invaluable life skills that extend far beyond the competition on the day.
On Monday 4 December our Year 7 students attended the Earl Arts Centre to watch The Odyessy performed by drama students from LYTE Theatre. Thank you to Mrs Breen and Mrs Howard for their organisation and planning of this event and for creating such wonderful opportunities for our students. Experiencing this drama performance helped students to develop cultural growth, offering them a firsthand encounter with the arts.
On Thursday 7 December our Year 7 basketball team coached by Mrs Garwood competed in their final match against a determined Queechy High School. It was a pleasure to watch the boys perform on the court and playing as a team to support each other during the match. Although Kings Meadows High School won the game convincingly with a final score of 86-36 on the night there were some outstanding team contributions that I would like to highlight. Firstly, congratulations to Lennox Hazell who was named MVP for the game because of his determined and confident performance. Secondly, I would like to highlight Nate Johnston who scored the final three points in the closing seconds of the game and all the players on the court at the time for ensuring they not only won on the night, but they also were able to walk away knowing that they supported each other often passing the ball to others who were yet to score points sacrificing their competitive drive to allow others opportunities for their teammates. Finally, I would like to congratulate the team for their level of professionalism in the last quarter and for the way they represented Kings Meadows High School through their fair and safe attitude. Thank you also to all the Year 7 students and parents who came to encourage the boys on the night as this helps to develop a sense of unity and school spirit, reinforcing the fact that collective support is as vital to success as individual performance.
Lastly, on Friday 8 December our Year 7 students participated in the Healthy Me Expo. During the morning they worked on a research investigation based on sleep using data provided by students to better understand and support developing heathy lifestyle habits. Thank you to Mrs Dobson for her planning of this activity. They also took time to explore gratitude further by writing cards to teachers who have taught them throughout the year.
Instilling gratitude in students cultivates a positive and empathetic mindset, promoting interpersonal relationships and a sense of community and provides an alternative to selfishness and self-interest. By teaching gratitude, we hope to empower students to recognize the value of kindness, fostering a school environment where appreciation and respect for others becomes foundational to personal and collective well-being. Students finished the day by participating in a range of hands-on team events such as flags, obstacle courses and slip and slide. They also visited displays from various organisation and local businesses that help to support the health and wellbeing of others leading to them having a better understanding about their wellbeing and the resources that are available to help them develop into healthier and happier individuals.
In conclusion I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the incredible Year 7 students, their dedicated parents and the tireless efforts of our exceptional teachers for their collaborative spirit in enhancing both learning and well-being within our classrooms this year.
The synergy between students, parents and educators has created a dynamic and supportive environment, fostering a culture of curiosity, resilience and camaraderie. The active engagement and commitment from each party have contributed significantly to the overall growth and success of our school community. Together, we have started building a foundation for lifelong learning and positive relationships, and for that, I express my sincere appreciation to the entire Year 7 community. Thank you for your unwavering dedication to the journey of education and the well-being of our students.

Celebrations
As the end of the year quickly approaches, students in Year 8 have been given some fantastic opportunities to say farewell to 2023 in style. On Friday 8 December our Year 8 students engaged in the ‘Healthy Me’ Expo, where local businesses and organisations with wellbeing links opened stalls and explained to the students what their organisations did and fielded questions from the students. Many of the stalls had interactive displays and giveaway items and the students found it to be an extremely beneficial experience. We would like to extend a big thank you to the Ms Hudson and the student leaders who helped run and plan this event.
Also on Friday 8 December, Kings Meadows High School ran its annual ‘Big Day Out’ for 2023. This event was combined with our Healthy Me Expo, to make an extra special day for our students. Students were treated to a range of outdoor activities and were entertained by student musicians. There was also the chance for students to purchase food from the food vans in attendance. It was a hot and sunny afternoon and teachers and students alike thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. The highlight of the event was the giant slip and slide and pie face sponge throwing stall. Again, a thank you to the staff and school leaders who assisted on the day and made it a success. This week we will also have our annual school picnic to Bridport. The focus for the day is around celebration, connecting with one another and having fun. Traditionally this has been a brilliant day which all students really value and enjoy.
As we head into our last week of term, we would like to thank our Year 8 families for their ongoing support throughout the course of the year. 2023 has been a challenging year for our students but also one for growth, aspiration and courage. As our students transition out of Year 8 and into Year 9 we encourage them to reflect on their year and set some goals ready for 2024 as members of the senior school.
The final Year 8 newsletter report would not be complete without thanking a multitude of people. Firstly, I would like to thank our Year 8 Class Teachers: Ms Jessica Crawford 8A, Mr Isaac Pinnington 8B, Mr Christian Cook 8C, Mrs Joh Breen 8D, Ms Mikhala Graham 8E and Mr Mick Bent 8F for going above and beyond in their roles as class teachers to our Year 8 students. I know our students really appreciate all they have done for them this year. Thank you also to Mrs Lunson for her wonderful teaching and support of our students. Another thank you goes to Mrs Kate Hume and Mr Cary Stocks who have been the ever-present guidance and support to our students as they progressed through the year at Kings Meadows High School. Their professionalism, care and dedication in supporting our students has been exceptional, thank you.
Finally, to our Grade Leaders Mr Sean Stevenson and Mr Sam Maddern. Thank you for guiding our students throughout this year, your care and concern for our students and your wonderful organisation have been an asset to our grade. Both much loved members of our grade and the hours of time they have given to our students has been most appreciated.
Overall, the 2023 school year has come and gone in a flash and we all are looking forward to Year 9 next year. On behalf of the Year 8 team, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you all in 2024!

Here we are at the end of the year! The past two weeks have continued to be busy and full of learning opportunities for our Year 9 students.
On Friday 8December, Kings Meadows High School held its annual Big Day Out and Healthy Me Expo events. Year 9 students really stood out on the day, with 2024 House Captains preparing running a barbeque and a large number of musical performances throughout the day being provided by our talented students. It was fantastic to see our students use the day to relax, enjoy each other’s company and strengthen relationships, engage with members of the community and have open discussions around mental health.
Our 2024 Student Leaders have also been preparing for next year. Students have met with our current 2023 leaders for a handover to learn more about their duties next year and have been supporting them with making our regular recess and lunchtime announcements over the PA system.
Today we held our whole school Presentation/Graduation Assembly, followed by our end of year assembly in Year 9, where many of our students were recognised for their outstanding accomplishments. Tomorrow we have our picnic day, travelling to Bridport. Students are reminded that they will not be able to access shops while there, but there will be a barbeque provided for all. Students must have returned their picnic form in advance to be able to attend.
In 2024, it has become necessary to reduce our core classes to six rather than the seven we have had this year. As a result, there have been several student movements between classes as we have rebalanced groups with a focus on maximising learning opportunities for all. Families should have received letters with student 2024 class allocations with their end of year reports.
We wish all of our students a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing everyone again in February.

These past two weeks have flown for the Year 10s. Congratulations have to go to our House Captains and Peer Support Leaders, supported by Mr Killalea and Ms Hudson, for the fantastic organisation of the KMHS Big Day Out and Healthy Me Expo. Students from all grades thoroughly enjoyed the activities on offer despite some of the questionable weather we were dealt on the day.
On Friday last week, we celebrated together as a group of staff and students at the Graduation Dinner held at the Grand Chancellor. The dinner was a fantastic success and a wonderful celebration for completing their final year of education at Kings Meadows High School. It was amazing to see the students formally dressed and looking mature and grown up. A massive thank you to all the families who had helped to prepare our students for this wonderful night; you did an amazing job as they all looked incredible.
In addition, we must thank Mrs Emma Dobson and the Graduation Dinner Committee of students and staff who put this wonderful night together. Thank you to our student committee, Mrs Pel, Ms Hudson and Mrs Breen (and Delia) for their efforts in setting up at the Grand Chancellor, it looked fantastic and made for a really memorable evening. Thank you also to Mrs Sarah Merritt for donating an amazing balloon garland that became a beautiful backdrop for countless photos.
Monday was our last day of “normal” classes with reality starting to set in for some students. The big wide world awaits, whether it’s college, an apprenticeship, TAFE or employment, so a final chance to sit in English or Science, a final locker cleanout and/or a final debrief about the events of the weekend was greatly appreciated.
Tuesday saw our students travel to the Devonport Bluff for their “mystery” picnic. The experience and opportunity for one more day of fun was still embraced by both the Year 10 staff and students. It was wonderful to be able to spend one of our last days together as a group having fun at the beach in cracking weather. Thank you to the Year 10 staff and, in particular, Mrs Selby and Mrs Pel for the organisation of a great day.
This morning was one final opportunity to take a trip down memory lane reminiscing and viewing some pictures/videos from the previous years. Mrs Selby prepared a fun Kahoot for us to see who knows the 2023 leavers cohort the best, then we shared a fantastic morning tea prepared by the Year 10 staff.
Our Presentation and Graduation Assembly was also held today where we celebrated the success of our students in all grades. Congratulations to all our Year 10 award recipients, they were thoroughly well deserved for an outstanding final year.
The final Year 10 newsletter report would not be complete without thanking a multitude of people.
We would like to thank our 2023 Class Teachers: Mr Ben Killalea for keeping 10A and the House Captains in line and always bringing a sense of humour to all situations; Mr Matt Chatwin for his continued support of 10B and the Prefects and incredible organisation of the Melbourne Trip; Mrs Belinda Selby for unwavering encouragement of 10C and the Beacon Student Ambassadors and fantastic organisation of a variety of events, excursions and activities; Mr Solomon Walker-Bowd for his ongoing care and positive regard for students in 10D and keeping everyone informed in all things English and History; Ms Mel Hudson for her continued support and guidance of 10E and our Peer Support Leaders, and her determination in seeing students succeed; and Miss Emily Lovegrove for her genuine care and support of all students in Elevate, always ready to tell a joke or sing a song at the drop of a hat.
Thank you to all the people who have shaped the journey over the last four years: Mrs Kate Hume, Mrs Katie Wightman, Ms Kate Blaubaum, Mrs Maree Pinnington, Ms Jeanna Bolton and Mr Cary Stocks for their leadership and willingness to listen; Miss Males, Mr Stevenson, Mr Whitford, Mr Richardson, Mrs MacFarlane, Ms Crawford, Mr Murray, Mrs Hodges, Miss Bannon, Ms Jansen, Miss Stebbings, Mr Bowden, Ms Casey, Mr Pedersen for being Grade Leaders/Class Teachers since 2020; and all other KMHS staff who have taught and supported this great group of students.
Last, but certainly not least, a huge thank you to Mrs Megan Pel and Mr Matt Battle for their tireless work and dedication to our 2023 leavers, they will certainly miss your guidance and support.
To the parents, carers and families of our Year 10 students, thank you for allowing us to teach, inspire and educate your children for the last four years. We hope we have in some way shaped your children into respectful, kind and courageous people. We will miss them and think of them fondly.
Good luck Year 10’s – be brave, make good choices, surround yourself with positive influences and look after yourselves and each other. The Kings Meadows High School community wish you all the best for the future.

The Technologies Learning Area students have had a remarkable journey this year. Our subjects under Food Technologies, Design Technologies and Digital Technologies have not only equipped our students with practical skills but have also fostered creativity, problem-solving and a deeper understanding of technology's role in our lives.
Our students have delved into the world of culinary arts, exploring diverse cuisines and mastering cooking techniques under the guidance of our dedicated teaching staff. Their creations in the kitchen have been nothing short of gastronomic delights, showcasing their growing expertise and passion for food.
In the workshop, our students have transformed raw materials into works of art and utility. Their projects reflect not just the skills they've learned, but also their creativity and attention to detail. These hands-on experiences have been invaluable in teaching them about craftsmanship, design and the joy of creating something with their own hands.
Our computing curriculum has opened new horizons for our students, immersing them in the digital world. From coding to digital design, our young tech enthusiasts have developed a strong foundation in computing, preparing them for the tech-driven future.
This year's success is a testament to the expertise, dedication and innovation of our teaching team. Their commitment to providing high-quality education and nurturing each student's potential has been the cornerstone of our achievements.
Special thanks to our support staff, Karen and Jacqui, whose tireless efforts and unwavering support have been instrumental in our smooth operations and the enriching learning experiences of our students. Your dedication and hard work do not go unnoticed.
As we celebrate our accomplishments, we also look forward to another year of growth and learning. Kings Meadows High School remains committed to offering top-notch educational experiences, preparing our students for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
Notice: The Workshop Team at Kings Meadows High School would like to remind parents and carers that all unclaimed Woodwork and Metalwork projects will be 'reclaimed' for recycling at the end of each year. If your child/ren have not yet brought their projects home, we kindly request that you organise for their collection as soon as possible. Please feel free to coordinate with your child or contact us directly to arrange for pickup.
Throughout Term 4, the senior enrichment for Athlete Development have spent their lessons learning about programming and training in a commercial gym setting. Our students were lucky enough to visit the Launceston Institute of Fitness and Training each week to follow their individualised training programs and develop their training habits as future athletes. Across the term, the group saw a great deal of improvement in both their performance and confidence, as well as setting a few personal records. In their final lesson last week, our students were also extended the privilege to undergo fitness testing at LIFT with SPR Conditioning where they tested their vertical jump, standing broad jump, the 505 change of direction test and more.
Thank you to LIFT for giving our students the opportunity to train in arguably the best commercial gym facility in the state and one of the best in the country. Also, thanks to SPR Conditioning for taking our students through a highly professional session that gave them an insight into the rigorous testing that professional and budding athletes go through when aiming for the elite level.
