CASTINGS TASMANIA:
A group of Grade 10 students visited Castings Tasmania, to understand more about how the science of metals is applied in industry.
Castings Tasmania is a metal foundry in Youngtown, who manufacture specialised steel-alloy products for export all around Australia and the World.
Aside from how moulds are manufactured and prepared, students learnt how combining different metallic and metalloid elements can alter the properties of steel, to make it appropriate for different uses. They also learnt how knowledge of the electromagnetic spectrum is used to analyse and verify the quality of the alloys.
We would like to thank Castings Tasmania’s metallurgist, Mr Whittaker, for taking the time to show us around the foundry and explain the work done there.
