Celebrating Student Success
Last Friday we held Celebratory Morning Teas for students who have recently received commendations for their outstanding application and effort towards their studies. It was wonderful to be able to congratulate these students with a morning tea and we are so incredibly proud of their application and efforts, certainly upholding our R.O.C.K.S. expectations around Commitment to Learning and modelling our values of Aspiration, Courage and Growth as they continue to strive for these outstanding results. Well done to all those students who were invited and attended.
Sanitary Products in Schools
As part of a student led initiative the State Government, have supported the free and easy access to sanitary products in schools. This is incredibly important and part of our continued way to support student wellbeing. Whilst we have always had this support available for our students if needed, it is great to see this initiative being rolled out across the state. Our School Health Nurse, Danni and Jasmine our Social Worker, will be working with our students to determine how we can improve our model of access. Details to come once student voice has been sought along with an investigation around possible distribution methods.
COVID Update
With the recent events in Launceston quarantine highlighting the unpredictable nature of the current pandemic, it is timely to consider what this means for us at Kings Meadows High School.
The current risk of an outbreak in Tasmania is very real.
As a school, we are asking students and families to abide by the changes we put in place in 2020 to mitigate any likelihood of community transmission. At Kings Meadows High School this means:
- Keep your children home if they are unwell, particularly if they exhibit respiratory like symptoms, coughs, colds and flu-like symptoms.
- Have yourselves or your children tested if you or they have any respiratory like symptoms.
- Avoid sending your children back to school if they are unwell, even if they are COVID free.
- When visiting our site, check in at the main office, maintain physical distancing and abide by the maximum room limits displayed.
- If on-site for any events like parent teacher, cross-country or athletics please sign in using the “Check-In Tas” App. These QR codes are located around our school during parent events.
- Sanitise when entering our site.
- Students are to use sanitiser located in all our classrooms at the beginning of each lesson.
- Follow any stay at home or isolation orders that may affect you or members of your family.
As a school we have a detailed plan about what happens if we have any community transmission of COVID-19 in Tasmania again.
During these still uncertain times I ask all of our community to not be complacent about the risks caused by COVID-19, remember the strategies we need to use to keep each other safe and please follow all our school-based management measures if you are on our site for any reason.
Thank you for your co-operation.
College Productions
Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of attending opening night of Launceston College’s Production “Grease”. It certainly was a spectacular show and I sat very proud watching so many ex Kings Meadows students performing with beaming smiles and confidence on stage. Congratulations to all involved.
Newstead College open their Production of “Legally Blonde” later this week and we wish the team all the best for their season, especially our past KMHS students. It is wonderful to see our students shine!
Warm regards
Maree

Celebrations
Last week, the Junior School held a morning team for students who received a Letter of Commendation. Letters of Commendation were given to students who demonstrated outstanding commitment to learning and academic achievement from their mid-year reports. It was wonderful to have both students and staff celebrate the hard work and learning that has taken place in Term 1 and 2.
Our nominations for Class Leaders for Term 3 and 4 are coming to a close. Students will soon be guided through the speech and voting process to determine the Class Leaders for the remainder of the year. Being a Class Leader offers a formal leadership opportunity to work within a group to achieve a common goal. Students will explore elements of leadership and increase their own knowledge and skills around being a successful leader.
Grade Focus
On Monday 16th August, Grade 7 will engage in their first My Education Day for Term 3. My Education is a supportive and inclusive approach that will inspire and guide students as they undertake a journey of discovery in identifying who they are and what they want to become. It supports students to identify their personal interests, values, strengths, opportunities and aspirations and teaches them how to use this knowledge to make decisions about their future learning, work and life opportunities. Our first day this Term will focus on what job opportunities may be available as students enter the workforce. Exploration of traditional and non-traditional work, coupled with determining areas of high and low growth will offer students the chance to consider what their working life could entail.

Celebrations
A big congratulations must go out to the Grade 8 cohort for their settled start to Term 3. It is great to see Grade 8 students following our ROCKS expectations which has ensured this positive start to Term 3.
In Grade assemblies, we have been discussing how quickly the school year is going, and the fact that students will soon be entering Senior School. Staff have discussed that in Grade 9 you will be role models for Junior School and the positive decisions you make today will hold you in good stead ready for Senior School.
Congratulations also to our Junior House Captains and Class Leaders for their fantastic efforts this so far this term. Along with Mr Chatwin, they are busy planning some exciting events for Grade 8. More details to come!
Grade Focus
The Grade 8 focus for this term will be centred around how to be a respectful member of the Kings Meadows High School community. We have emphasised the importance of being proud of your school, looking after our fantastic facilities, wearing uniform with pride and being respectful to all members of our school community. An important point we are focussing on is being a respectful member of the Kings Meadows High School community extends outside the school gates. We want each and every student to build upon our school's already positive reputation.
The following reminders have been discussed in this week’s grade assembly:
- Lockers must be locked at all times with your phone placed inside.
- Please wait until you are outside B Block before you start eating.
- Breakfast Club - food and drinks need to be consumed before entering B Block.
- After you have accessed your locker head straight to class.
- After school move directly to the location where your bus picks you up from.
- Students who are walking or catch a bus outside of the school gate need to leave site promptly.
Celebrations
The Grade 9’s were recently informed of the opportunity to apply for leadership positions for 2022. All Grade 9 students were encouraged to apply for the following positions: Prefect, Beacon Student Ambassador, Peer Support Leader or House Captain. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to build their capacity in the leadership space and even simply going through the selection process is an invaluable chance for students to gain experience. It was great to see such a big response to this fantastic opportunity, with over 60 students taking application packs. Students will prepare their applications and Mr Gale and Mr Stokes look forward to reading them over the coming weeks.
Grade Focus
With the Olympics at the forefront of everyone’s minds this past fortnight, the Grade 9 cohort have had a grade focus on striving for excellence. All staff and students have been encouraging one another to give their best effort and push themselves out of their comfort zones in an attempt to achieve this.
Celebrations
As the days tick by this term, we are now entering our fourth week. Most of our students have returned their Grade 10 agreement letter, which is fantastic, but we still have a few to chase up. Please ensure you have read this letter, signed and returned to your child’s home group teacher. A reminder to all parents and students that this agreement is a contract between the school and the Grade 10 students based around behaviour expectations, academic rigour, uniform and attendance. We are hoping that our Grade 10’s will use this opportunity to complete their last two terms at KingMHS in the most productive and positive way.
This week and next, our students will be given the opportunity to be involved in the Speak up, Stay Chatty Program. This will be centred around mental health and supporting our students in this space. The topics of conversation in these sessions may be sensitive in nature so we are ensuring our students are well supported by having our school social worker, psychologist and nurse in attendance. We are really looking forward to involving our students in this program. Any further information parents or students may need about this program can be sought by contacting Mrs Elliott.
This term we will be holding some extra college transition sessions for students who either missed our college transitions days or would like some more information. These sessions will be informal sessions and will be open to anyone who seeks interest. If parents wish to gain more information about what each college offers, both colleges’ have websites with videos, course selection guides and information about their campuses. The Newstead College website link is https://newsteadcollege.education.tas.edu.au/ and Launceston College’s link is https://launcestoncollege.education.tas.edu.au/
