GRADE 7 TRANSITION

At Kings Meadows High School we are in continuous conversations with our Primary Schools through our targeted transition program. Our transition program supports a smooth transition into year 7 where students have a core team of teachers for English, Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS), Mathematics, Science, Health and Physical Education.

Our year 7 students remain in their class teacher group for their core and option lessons in Design Technologies, Drama, Food Technology, LOTE, Music, and Visual Arts. The building that is home to year 7 is separate from other year groups providing security and comfort while students are gradually exposed to the school environment. Class teachers are responsible for the welfare and pastoral care of students in their class teacher group.

In addition, students choose four enrichment courses that they study with year 8 students. Studying enrichment courses with students from across year 7 and 8 classes supports everyone to increase their circle of friendships, confidence, resilience, and motivation to succeed.

Every year group has access to leadership opportunities a particular highlight is the opportunity to be a Transition Leader.  In this role year 7 students act as mentors to year 6 students, sharing information about High School and offering friendship and support as they transition from Primary school to Kings Meadows.

The department provides us with data describing academic achievement of our students.  Across the Connect 6 schools we engage with a range of survey tools to gather answers about how students are feeling about school and their learning.  We gain valuable information that informs our carefully phased, yearlong transition program that responds to the social and emotional needs of adolescents. We use our Department values of Respect, Growth, Courage and Aspiration to create a safe learning environment that responds to the needs of individuals in order to motivate and engage students to be the best version of themselves.

We have a Peer Support program, designed to build successful peer relationships and leadership skills.  Peer Support leaders work with the year 7 team to support students to develop personal organisation, time management skills and a greater understanding of high school life.

Our teachers have high expectations for teaching and learning.  They understand they need to prepare students for an ever-changing world.  Our transition program provides collaboratively developed experiences for all our students.  We work closely with students and their families, year 6 teachers, learning support teachers, social workers and psychologists to develop our transition program.

Some of the ways we work to create a shared successful transition experience include:

  • Challenge Day
  • Parent information Evening
  • In school Observations
  • Online community and digital platforms for increased communication of information
  • Flexible programs
  • Enrichment courses
  • Learning support visits
  • Social Work groups; and
  • Orientation Day

GRADE 10-11 TRANSITION

Full time students must enrol in at least four subjects in Year 11 but may choose to take more. VET Courses are equivalent to two subjects. As such, a student enrolled in Certificate II in Construction Pathways would also be enrolled in a at least 2 TASC subjects such as Level 2 Maths and English.

What if I want to attend full time at Kings Meadows High School but there is a subject, I want to do that Kings Meadows High School do not offer?

If a student wants to attend full time at Kings Meadows High School, rather than travel across 2 campuses, but wants to study a subject that Kings Meadows High School does not offer, the student may enrol in that subject through Virtual Learning Tasmania (VLT) or a shared enrolment with a college or another extension school.

What is Virtual Learning Tasmania?

Virtual Learning Tasmania gives students the opportunity to study a range of offerings including TASC courses at Level 1, 2 and 3 and Certificate II VET courses. Students enrolled in VLT would remain at Kings Meadows High School and access their VLT course content, resources and teachers online. This allows students to access their VLT content anytime, anywhere. Our students have already become well acquainted with online and blended learning through the use of platforms such as Canvas. In addition to the learning, they undertake online, VLT students meet with their online teacher and other students in ‘virtual sessions’ which are scheduled for each course. Students enrolled in VLT will also be supported by Kings Meadows High School teachers who will assist them with technology and general study skills. Virtual Learning Tasmania subject and course offerings will change from year to year, so please feel free to contact the school to discuss what the current offerings are and how these can be incorporated into the study program offered at Kings Meadows High School.

What is the TCE?

The TCE (Tasmanian Certificate of Education) was developed in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders including employers, industry bodies, education and training providers, parent and community bodies, schools and colleges, educational experts and learners. Gaining the TCE shows Gaining the TCE shows that a person has met the requirements for: • ‘Everyday adult’ reading, writing and communication (in English) • ‘Everyday adult’ mathematics • ‘Everyday adult’ use of computers and the internet • A prescribed level of participation and achievement in education and training (120 credit points) • Requirements for planning future education and training Your TCE is significant because it shows potential employers that you have successfully completed two years of full time study at college level and that you have achieved everyday adult achievement standards in English, Maths and ICT.

Will Kings Meadows High School offerings allow me to gain my TCE?

Yes, either through a shared enrolment between Kings Meadows High School and one of the colleges or extension high schools, you will be enrolled in courses which will allow you to achieve your TCE over a two-year period. In order to do this, you will need: • Literacy, Numeracy and ICT standards • 120 TCE credit points, 80 of which need to be at Level 2 or above • Satisfactory completion of Career and Life Planning

CONSTRUCTION PATHWAYS

(Runs all day Tuesday & Friday at KMHS. Students can study full time at KMHS or attend another college on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday as a shared enrolment if desired)

The CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways qualification gives students opportunities to learn through making as well as providing them with practical DIY skills in the allied trades.

VET courses are designed to prepare students for the workplace or further education. These courses may be particularly suited to students who are eager to gain employment and enjoy practical skills, hands on, authentic and real-life learning. This course may also suit students on a university pathway such as engineering or architecture, to enhance theoretical understanding.

The construction pathways qualification provides a pathway to the primary trades in the construction industry. Trade outcomes are predominantly achieved through an Australian Apprenticeship and this Certificate II allows for inclusion of skills suited for entry to off-site occupations in general construction. This Certificate II is designed to introduce learners to the recognised trade areas in the construction industry and provide meaningful credit in a construction industry Australian Apprenticeship.

This nationally recognised qualification comprises 10 units of competency, 5 core (the same as the colleges) and 5 electives (selected by KMHS) along with the attainment of the White Card.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

The program is offered to any student in Year 11 or 12 across the region. Enrolment in the construction VET course is subject to expression of interest and interview. Students enrolled in construction pathways qualification may choose to attend KMHS full time or do a shared enrolment with a college or another extension school.

WHY THIS PROGRAM?

The elective chosen by KMHS are due to the high demand for these skills - Bricklaying, tiling and concreting (Formwork carpentry and Placement).

The subcontractor trades provide pathways for students to work for themselves or for a building company and can be the first step towards becoming a builder.

In order to gain full qualifications (Cert III) in trades, students will need to complete an apprenticeship.

A PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR YOUR FUTURE PATHWAY

Full time students must enrol in at least 4 subjects in Year 11 but may choose to take more. VET Courses are equivalent to 2 subjects. Students have many ways to study Construction Pathways via KMHS. A full Certificate II or part Certificate (Statement of Attainment) can combine with other KMHS courses, Virtual Learning Tasmania (VLT) offerings or a shared enrolment. Your enrolment choices should lead towards successful Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) attainment at the end of Year 12.

WHERE IN THE SCHOOL WILL I STUDY FROM?

We now have a purpose built 11/12 building with classroom, kitchenette, toilets, undercover work area, outdoor work areas and construction sheds. Students can catch any of the school buses onto campus or one of the many public buses that travel into the Kings Meadows Area. For those who drive, there is car parking spaces available close to the building.
