At this time of year, schools do have staffing changes.
As many of you are aware, Mrs Maree Pinnington has won the position of External School Review Leader. We were fortunate to have Mrs Pinnington with us at the Presentation Assembly where the Prefects farewelled her.
For the last 6 years Kings Meadows High School has been privileged to have Mrs Pinnington as our Principal. Under your leadership our school has flourished into the supportive and welcoming community it is today. You have cultivated an environment full of aspiration and growth and a school built of respect and commitment to learning. In your time here you have harbored a culture inclusive of all people regardless of ability and provided so many students with an education and opportunity. Your positive influence and the quality of your work is visible as soon as you walk through our gates and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done for our school. Your dedication, passion and love for Kings Meadows is clear. Although we are all sad to see you go, we wish you all the best for your journey into the future.

School resumes for students on Wednesday 9 February 2022.
Lastly I would like to thank the staff and students at Kings Meadows High School for their support and making me feel welcome as Principal in Term 4. I’m really pleased and excited to announce that in 2022 I will be taking up the position of Principal at Riverside High School. Cary Stocks has been appointed the Principal for Kings Meadows High School next year. Cary has been working in schools and in Learning Services for a number of years and will bring invaluable knowledge and understandings to the Kings Meadows community.
Jeanna Bolton
Acting Principal

Organisation
Commitment to learning
Keeping safe
Sensible behaviour
We would like to acknowledge the following students:
Grade 7:
Caleb Johnston - for consistently following the ROCKS.
Riley Richmond - for consistently following the ROCKS.
Grade 8:
Lincoln Frimley-Turner – for being a respectful and hardworking student.
Logan Kingston – for finishing the year strong and showing his full potential.
Grade 9:
Brianna Murfet – for her committed approach to all learning opportunities.
Oscar Alberti – for his enthusiastic approach to his learning and encouraging his peers.
Grade 10:
Marcelline Bula & Jessica Homan - for their commitment in organising the Grade 10 choir for the Graduation Assembly.
As we head into our last week of term, we would like to thank our Grade 7 families for their ongoing support throughout the course of the year. Transitioning to high school can be a significant challenge at times for our students. It has been a challenging time but also one for growth, aspiration and courage. As our students transition out of Grade 7 and into Grade 8 we encourage them to reflect on their year and set some goals ready for 2022. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely goals are a fantastic way to keep motivated with learning, both academically and socially.
Across the past four terms, we have seen over 160 students embrace high school and the associated challenges. Some of those challenges in week one, our students now complete without a second thought. Such things as reading timetables, finding new classrooms and new teachers are done with ease. This would however not be the case without our fantastic teachers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Grade 7 teaching staff on behalf of our students and parent body. They have worked tirelessly this year to produce the best lessons and they have supported our students and kept them focussed with academic rigour. The hours of time each of them has given to our students has been most appreciated.
This week we also had our annual school picnic to Bridport. The focus for the day was around celebration, connecting with one another and having fun. Traditionally this has been a brilliant day which all students really value and enjoy. On behalf of the grade team, we wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas.
Celebration of the Year
As the school year has come to an end, it is important to congratulate all people that have made Grade 8 such a successful year of teaching and learning. Well done to all students in the grade for their positive engagement in the learning program throughout the year. You are to be commended on the effort given to all subjects and hopefully this has prepared you well for studies next year in senior school. Well done to all students who actively participated in the school carnivals this year. It was fantastic to see so many students involved which indicates to all that Kings Meadows High School spirit is alive and well. A big congratulations needs to go out to the Grade 8 teachers for their efforts this year with teaching, learning and general care for our students in the grade. Overall, the 2021 school year has come and gone in a flash and we all are looking forward to being senior school next year. The Grade 8 team wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you all in 2022.
Duces of 2021
A massive congratulations to Cobi Griffiths (8E) and Addison Keegan (8A) for being awarded the Duces of Grade 8 at the annual Kings Meadows High School Presentation Assembly. The dedication and commitment you display towards your learning has made you both worthy winners of this award. Well done on a fantastic year.
Farewell
The Grade 8 cohort would like to farewell Miss Bannon and thank her for everything she has done this year in the Grade 8 space. We wish you all the best in your new endeavours at Deloraine Primary School.
Celebrations
As the end of the year quickly approaches, students in Grade 9 have been given some fantastic opportunities to say farewell to 2021 in style. On our recent My Education Day, the students engaged in the ‘Healthy Me’ Expo, where local businesses and organisations who are involved in wellbeing opened stalls and explained to the students what their organisations did and fielded questions from the students. Many of the stalls had interactive displays and giveaway items and the students found it to be an extremely beneficial experience. We would like to extend a big thank you to the teachers and student leaders who helped run and plan this event.
On Friday 3 December, Kings Meadows High School ran its annual ‘Big Day Out’ for 2021. Students were treated to a range of outdoor activities and were entertained by musicians. There was also the chance for students to purchase food from the food vans in attendance. It was a lovely sunny afternoon and teachers and students alike thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Again, a thank you to the staff and school leaders who assisted on the day and made it a success.
Grade Focus
Our final behavioural goal for 2021 is all around displaying safe behaviours at school. Students who consistently display safe and supportive behaviour will be issued with certificates of appreciation from the staff. We encourage all of our students to strive to receive one of these in the last two weeks of the school year.
Celebrations
These past two weeks have flown for the Grade 10's. On Friday last week we celebrated together as a group of staff and students at the Graduation Dinner held at the Country Club Casino. The dinner was a fantastic success and a wonderful celebration for completing their final year of education at Kings Meadows High School. It was amazing to see the students formally dressed and looking mature and grown up. A massive thank you to all the families who had helped to prepare our students for this wonderful night, you did an amazing job as they all looked incredible.
In addition, we must thank the Graduation Dinner Committee of students and staff who put this wonderful night together. Thank you to our student committee, Mrs Pel, Mrs Elliott, Mrs Breen, Mr Wood and Ms Hudson for their efforts in setting up at the casino, it looked wonderful, just like an enchanted garden. Thank you also to Mrs Ponting and Mrs Rigby in the office for designing and printing the invitations, menu booklet and place settings for the tables. This took considerable time and effort to complete and we thank them for giving such diligence and precision to making them look so professional.
Our Presentation Assembly was held on Monday where we celebrated the success of our students in all grades. Congratulations to all our award recipients, they were thoroughly well deserved for an outstanding Grade 10 year.
Tuesday saw our students travel to Greens Beach for their “mystery” picnic. A day of beautiful weather, great company and lots of fun was had by both the Grade 10 staff and students. It was wonderful to be able to spend one of our last days together as a group having fun, swimming and relaxing on the beach. Thank you to the Grade 10 staff and in particular Mrs Pel for the organisation of such an awesome day.
Our last day together as a grade involved a final Grade Assembly held by Mrs Pel and Mrs Elliott. The assembly was our final time together to laugh, cry and enjoy ourselves. Thank you to Ella Fullbrook who prepared a fantastic slideshow of memories. This was a wonderful trip down memory lane reminiscing and viewing some pictures from the previous years. Mrs Elliott prepared a fun Kahoot for us to laugh at and the teachers put together an amusing video. The morning also gave our students the opportunity to rehearse for our final Graduation Assembly and prior to the Graduation Assembly our students were invited to a morning tea together, prepared and cooked by our Grade 10 teachers plus other volunteer staff. Thank you to all staff who came in early before school to prepare this for our students, it is very much appreciated. The culmination of our last day was the Graduation Assembly. This involved musical items, dance, videos, farewell speeches and the presentation of the Graduation certificates. As parents were not allowed in attendance, due to Covid venue density guidelines, the assembly was filmed and recorded and can be viewed on the school Facebook page as well as in this newsletter. Thank you to our parents, guardians and families for your understanding on this.
The final Grade 10 newsletter report would not be complete without thanking a multitude of people.
Firstly, I would like to thank our Grade 10 Class Teachers; Ms Karen Furley 10A, Mr Mick Bent 10B, Ms Mel Hudson 10C, Mr Solomon Walker-Bowd 10D and Mrs Katie Mathews 10E for going above and beyond in their roles as class teachers to our Grade 10 students. I know our students will miss them next year. Thank you to Mrs Belinda Selby for supporting our Beacon students this year and for your general knowledge of all things Grade 10. Thank you to Mr James Guy for organising and sourcing the many work placements for our Grade 10’s throughout the year. Without your dedication and hard work our students would not have had the opportunities they were given. Thank you also to Mr Glenn Wood, our Packages of Learning teacher this year for providing this opportunity to our students and for giving our students valuable skills for the workforce.
Mrs Katie Wightman, Ms Kate Blaubaum, Mrs Maree Pinnington and Ms Jeanna Bolton have been the ever-present guidance and support to our students as they progressed through their years at Kings Meadows High School. Mrs Wightman nurtured us through years 7 and 8 and Ms Blaubaum in the senior years 9 and 10. Their professionalism, care and dedication in to supporting our students has been exceptional, thank you. Thank you and best wishes also to Mrs Pinnington on her new role as School Review Leader, our students have been lucky to have such a dedicated, caring, and respected leader as their Principal. Although Ms Bolton has only been with us a short time she has fitted in well with our school and our students have instantly made connections with her.
Finally, to our Grade Leader for years 7 to 9, Mr Tom Hartley. Thank you for guiding our students through the early years, you are a much-loved member of our Grade and our students are very appreciative for all that you did for them.
Last but certainly not least a huge thank you must go to Mrs Megan Pel for all that she has done for our Grade 10 students. Your care and concern for our students and your wonderful organisation have been an asset to our grade. The Grade 10 students will miss you.
To the parents, families and guardians of our Grade 10 students, thank you for allowing us to teach, inspire and educate your children for the last four years. We have enjoyed all the moments, the good and the challenging and we hope we have in some way shaped your children into respectful, kind and courageous people. We will miss them and think of them fondly.
Good luck Grade 10’s. Follow your dreams, take on challenges, aim high, make good choices and surround yourself with good people. The staff of Kings Meadows High School wish you all the best for the future.

Dear Families
I would like to take this opportunity in the final newsletter for the year to convey to all my sincere gratitude and thanks to everyone in our school community, not only for the support shown to the staff, students and school over 2021 but also for the past six years during my time as Principal of Kings Meadows High School.
As you know this last term, I have undertaken an out of school position as a School Improvement Leader which involves supporting 30 schools and their leadership teams around improvement. I have really enjoyed being able to support and share my wisdom in this space with many schools and in 2022 I will begin a new position with the Department of Education as an External School Review Leader. This is a statewide role and I will be leading External School Reviews with other panel members, again in the area of school improvement, which I am very excited about.
As I sat in the Princess Theatre recently enjoying the KMHS Arts Evening I choked up thinking how could I step away from this magnificent school! I asked a trusted friend and colleague how they had done this through similar circumstance. Their response was that, “it is hard to leave a place that you’ve devoted and given so much time to, but a bigger system needs your wisdom now”. I always say to others that life is about being courageous to take hold of the opportunities that are afforded to you and after six years at Kings Meadows High School and 10 years as a Principal it is time to change direction for me.
When I think about my time at Kings Meadows High School there are so many memories and reflections, too many to mention but as I said in my thank you to the school community at Presentation Day Assembly in using the acronym of KMHS;
K is about the kindness that is displayed throughout our school and the interactions between people; staff, students and families. It is about the way people are accepting of others, respectful to and of each other and the environment in which we work and learn. It is about the kindness and support that I have been shown as Principal for the last six years.
M could be about the magnificent or marvellous school we have. No disagreements there but in reflection, to me, it is about meaning. The whole reason why we come to school and work every day. This place certainly has meaning for me and purpose and I have never found it a chore to come to work as it gave me my meaning and purpose every day; to try to be the best I could be as Principal and colleague and friend so that our learning environment was the best it could be for our learners. This has been my motivating passion and I am so proud of the school and its reputation as one of the best public education schools in Tasmania.
H Again I could say it is for "a happy place" or “lots of humour " as there certainly are lots of these qualities at Kings but the word, I think of for me reflecting about my time here is humble. I am incredibly humbled, and it has been an honour to have been the Principal here for the past six years and finally S.
S reflects my sincerity about this. It is a sensational place to work, it most certainly has been the best place I have worked and to have been your Principal and the Principal of Kings Meadows High School has truly been a privilege and honour and I will always be grateful and thankful for my time here.
I have had the best staff team to work with and I thank them all for their unwavering hard work, commitment and loyalty and support of my leadership.
We have the best student cohort too at Kings and I thank them for their friendship, laughs and dedication to their learning.
Thank you to all families and community members for your support over the past six years and I wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and safe holiday break and know with confidence that the school will continue to grow and flourish as a school.
Warm regards and thanks
Maree Pinnington

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM OUR CHAPLAIN:
Dear Kings Meadows High School Community
There is an old saying, and I’m unsure who coined the phrase, that goes something like this: ‘life takes many twists and turns, so be ready to twist and turn with it’.
The boy scout motto is similar and is a great approach to circumstances and situations that you may find yourself in which may have come about from a bit of a twist or turn, ‘be prepared’.
Upon hearing the Scout motto, someone asked Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell the inevitable follow-up question. “Prepared for what?”
“Why, for any old thing,” he replied.
Well, I have to say I wasn’t prepared for the past month, but I have twisted and turned as best I can, and the road is looking a bit straighter.
Let me give a bit of context.
Had you asked me a month ago if I was returning as Chaplain in 2022 the answer would have been a resounding yes. I love being a chaplain for a variety of reasons, being able to get alongside people who are struggling with school attendance, relationships, identity, family issues and a multitude of other reasons, and that’s just the teachers?
Jokes aside, I do take my role as Chaplain seriously as am fortunate to be able to do something I love as a job.
As I said before, life has many twists and turns and a month ago I applied for a position at City Mission Launceston, working within the homeless sector, twist #1. A few days after an interview, I was offered the position, which I accepted, turn #1.
Twist and turn #2; Thursday 9th December was my last day at Kings Meadows High School as your Chaplain. It has been a privilege to work with you all and to have the opportunity to support staff and students here at the school. I will certainly miss being here and I will look fondly upon my time at Kings Meadows High School.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Kings Meadows High School staff, students, volunteers and the wider community for your support over the past three years as Chaplain at Kings Meadows High School and it is my prayer that the school will find a suitable replacement for 2022 and beyond.
I would also like to wish the graduating Grade 10 students a safe and successful future.
For returning students, staff, and families, be prepared:
What for?
For any old thing ?
Have a wonderful & Merry Christmas and a safe & prosperous New Year,
Thank you,
Paul Burton
Chaplain
FAREWELL TO PAUL & THANK YOU TO OUR MENTORS & VOLUNTEERS:
We would like to farewell our Chaplain, Paul Burton, who is leaving us to work at the City Mission. Paul has been our Chaplain for the past three years and has worked with a small caseload of students, as well as running our Breakfast Club, gardening groups, Blokes Program and a motorbike repair group. Paul has developed strong connections with the support team, our volunteers and the students he has worked with. We thank him for his contributions to our school.
We would also like to take the opportunity to thank our mentors and volunteers who give up their own time to support our students and help to make our school the amazing place it is. Thank you to: Kevin Doherty, Jenny Doherty, Kathleen Doherty, Peter Anderson, Les Hodge, Caleb Watson, Bernice Heys, Waheed Hugrass, Cecylia Hugrass and Stephanie Baughman.
We also have a number of sponsors who have assisted us with donations for our Breakfast Club Program. Thanks go to: Andrew and Kathy from Baker’s Delight, Kings Meadows, Donna from Woolworths, Kings Meadows, David from Kings Meadows Rotary Club, Pure Foods and the Punchbowl Christian Centre.
Your support and commitment to our school are much appreciated.
Students in Grade 8 Design and Technology have recently finished a drink coaster project. For this project, students were required to use veneers of Tasmanian timbers, including the highly desired Huon Pine which were glued onto MDF squares. Students could design any pattern on top of their coaster following a chosen theme, with some choosing to use the laser engraver to embellish their project. Students also built a nifty little holder to keep their coasters in. Along the way, students completed theoretical work identifying the six different types of Tasmanian timbers used and explaining the benefits of working with veneer.
Students in Senior Woodwork classes have been busily working on free choice projects this term. Each student was required to design, plan, cost up and produce a project of their own choosing. This required students to think about the skills they have learnt from previous projects and how they can be utilised to produce a project that suits their own needs. Students needed to apply both their creative thinking and problem-solving skills to ensure their project was successfully constructed. Check out some of the amazing projects our very talented students have produced.
In the second last week of the year, I got the opportunity to attend the Santos Science Experience at the University of Tasmania. This came about thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Youngtown who sponsored my place in this learning program. Over three days I mixed with other students from the north of the state who are interested and passionate about all things Science. The program was run by supervisors from a range of scientific fields organised through the University.
My favourite experiences included the Aboriginal Science walk where we learnt about all the different sciences Aboriginal people understood and utilised in their everyday life. Being allowed to visit the QVMAG to see one of the largest butterfly collections in Australia, was also a highlight. I also learnt about Chemistry, Haematology, Pathology and so much more.
The best part of the program was how ‘hands-on’ it was. Every day we got to do practical activities that related to what we were learning about. The biggest learning that I took away from this experience was how important it is for scientists to be multi-disciplinary in their studies, because this allows you to be able to understand and appreciate problems from a range of perspectives, which in turn leads to better solutions.
I am very grateful to the Rotary Club of Youngtown for this valuable opportunity.
